Grill or no grill...that is the question!
Comments (9)Personally (just my opinion) I would skip the grill UNLESS you are willing to spend a decent amount of time and energy cleaning it. You will have to treat it like an outdoor grill, meaning 10-15 minutes warm up and 10-15 minutes afterward blasting the heat to burn off the grease. After that, you've got some clean up to do unless you want it looking all charred. Also, keep in mind that the heat output is not going to be fantastic on ANY residential indoor grill. You'll get about 500 degrees at the surface where a good charcoal or wood fire is about 1000 degrees. Now, that said, if grilling is a way of life and you want the option no matter what then the choice is clear! Just be clear on your expectations. -Stooxie...See MoreOutdoor Grills - DCS vs. American Outdoor Grill
Comments (21)I have cooked on all three and the TEK IR is the only gas grill that cooks as well as charcoal. It's advantages over charcoal are that it is quick to set up, easy to clean up and does an excellent job of creating the charcoal taste. As many here know, the flavor is created by the smoke from the fat striking the hot surface be it charcoal or something else. The higher the IR energy (from gas or charcoal) and the less the flame, the more smoke generated rather than being turned into additional flame. The TEK creates a great deal of smoke because the IR glass sits between the flame and the dripping grease. On older style IR burners there is still an open flame to ignite the grease drippings reducing the amount of smoke to add flavor. With charcoal, once the embers are glowing red, it is emitting a lot of IR and much less to no flame and hence produces a lot of smoke and flavor. I have owned the FireMagic and I would not purchase another. The burners are cast SS but they still do rust over time and the flavor grills wear out too. They are very hard to clean and the heat was not anywhere near as good as the advertisements. If you are the type that never clean a grill and don't mind a gritty looking grill it may not matter. I am the type that wants it to look clean and inviting each time and the self cleaning feature along with the dishwasher removal panels makes the TEK a breeze to clean and keep looking nice. For me that was worth a lot. The more conventional grills like the Firemagic, even with their ceramic infrared burner are not even a close match....See Moredo you use your range top grill?
Comments (10)We use our BS grill all the time. I use a grill brush while it is still hot. That gets the grates clean of stuck-on bits. I keep the long grill brush in a pots and pans drawer that holds the ones I don't use that frequently. My housekeeper cleans the inside of the grill every couple of weeks. She changes the foil in the drip trays and cleans the metal piece that covers the burners. Is it perfect? No. But it's a working kitchen, not a museum. And I don't even use the cover. I just don't care enough to do that. The top of the grill looks pretty good and no one is going to peer inside to look below. I love your kitchen Kate. It's on my top three GW kitchens and I can't even name the other two! But use it. Life is too short to stress about stuff like this, IMO. I think this is like getting the first marble etches. You get upset and then get over it....See MoreOven Problems! Have You Baked Ham In Counter Top Roaster?
Comments (12)Thanks flwrs! And Cj - Knowing you both had success with using the roaster is reassuring. I use a brown sugar and bourbon glaze and I dont think anyone will notice the ham isnt very brown. My biggest worry is that the ham is only 8 pounds and might get too dry. I promise to use my electronic thermometer. Fori, I dont think I could talk my DH into grilling. Our current forecast is: "Snow beginning around midnight tonight and ending around noon (CST) Friday with 2-4" in most places. Isolated higher amounts are possible near the 5-6" range." He might grill for us if we only get 2 more inches more than that and you could probably hear him laugh all the way to your house. Beuhl, I am intrigued by the thought of using the slow cooker. I have an older one that has a metal container that sits on a griddle style base. I know the ham would fit nicely in there. I wonder if the glaze would do better in the roaster or the slow cooker. The instruction booklet has been missing for years. As I remember it was only 3 or 4 thin pages with very little real info. Cindy, may I have your apricot, mustard and honey glaze recipe. I promise to wrap that ham in foil before baking. It sounds delicious! I think my brown sugar and bourbon would stick tight to the foil and everyone would be tearing off bits of foil so they could lick the glaze off. I see you are due for a high of 52 degrees tomorrow. I do miss South Carolina winters!! Here in my part of Iowa we are promised a high of 20 tomorrow, which really isnt too bad. (My southern bones cant believe Im saying that.) Northcarolina, I use my roaster to cook 15 to 18 pounds of pork (I also use boston butt) for BBQ all the time. The next time Im making a smaller amount I will try the slow cooker. Hmmm New Years BBQ. I think I will try your sage and sugar combination with my spices. I have been wanting something with sage lately. I love the aroma of sage cooking. Jakabedy, I like cooking a big turkey in the roaster because it does seem cook up more moist than in the oven. But my old Panasonic convection microwave cooked a very moist turkey in half the time. Thank you all for taking time to reassure me. May all your holiday meals be wonderful!...See Morechloebud
