We just yesterday learned that my sister-in-law has terminal, metastatic lung cancer. Due to her other health issues, there will be no fighting it, just care to keep her comfortable as the evil disease progresses.

Thinking of you Moonie. I hope your medical team is taking good care of you and doing all they can to make sure you are comfortable.

Just to clear up any confusion about the pain meds, I was not aware that you had to ask for them. I thought that you were put on like a 4 hours schedule but you have to ask for them and usually the nurse will ask you your level of pain and then she'll say do you need pain meds. So they're not withholding them it was a mistake on my part. Thanks you guys I really appreciate all the prayers and good thoughts coming from all of you. Thank you

So sorry that you are going through all of this. I'm glad to read that they will listen to you and treat re the pain.

When my sister had pain she dipped into a dangerous depression and had to be hospitalized for suicidal thoughts. It took a while but she was finally given the right dosage and was fine afterwards. Wishing the same for you.

I think about you often, Moonie and hope you're having the pain managed. You sound like a very strong woman, and I am sending you my very best thoughts and wishes.

The idea is to Keep Ahead of the Pain with medications. I've just RE-LEARNED that with my own pain from MM lesions, sciatica, and the 'whatever it is'.

Prayers! And take Chisue's advice and stay ahead of the pain whenever possible. Don't turn downoain medications just because it is toleraiat the moment and be aggressive in asking for medication when you need it.

Moonie, I’m sure there are several of us who wished we’d known you weren’t aware that you need to mention your pain to them as needed. But yes, don’t ever hesitate to tell them anything you are feeling that is different from the last time they spoke with you, regardless of how insignificant or trivial it may seem; including an increase in your pain levels. Everyone’s reaction or threshold to the multitude of medications you’ll be receiving is different. You could be having a reaction of some sort and not realize it, but unless you make them aware, they will just assume all is good. My DH is one who thinks a lot of his aches, pains and tummy troubles are not important or MM related when they really are. Last time he had fractured his lower arm where a lesion had literally drilled into the hardest part of his bone (which was so so painful). He thought he’d hurt it while cleaning ice on the drive and suffered until he finally mentioned it to me a few weeks later.

Pain is chemical and the pain medication blocks that so you need to anticipate your pain(and who knows your pain cycle better than you) That is the optimal way to control pain since getting pain under control is harder than keeping you from feeling it. Be proactive and squeak(as in squeaky wheel) Grinning and bearing is my own flaw and I know better. Be comfortable.

Moonie, do you have anyone that can post comments on here on those problem days? People will worry when you do not post and some of the comments could brighten your thoughts on those bad days. Wishing you no bad days but know that there may be a few.

Thoughts and many prayers for you. Has your doctor mentioned immunotherapy to you? My friend had stage 4 lung cancer but it is gone! She was so sick but looks and feels great now. I am hoping this might be a solution for you also.

So sorry Moonie. You should let your nurse know the pain isn't controlled. Sometimes they can see if the doctor will order something in between the other pain medication. A lot of times you will have something in pill form, and then something iv for "breakthrough" pain in between. Your nurse and doctors may think the one you're getting is helping enough if you don't say something.

No way it is your fault. They should be asking you "what do you need"? "How is your pain?"

They may be asking moonie the same way they asked my husband when he had his knee replacement. "Are you OK". He thought they were asking him if he was comfortable in his bed and not about his pain level. None of us knows what or how they were asking. I just hope moonie gets some relief even if it means La La Land.

If they have a patient who is on pain medication or who has medical conditions that normally produce pain, the nurses should ask them upon each visit what their pain level is using the "smiley face"/or 1-10 scale. This is one issue I have always felt very strongly about. It is unconscionable and cruel to allow a patient to suffer pain that they have medication prescribed for, or can be prescribed for them with a simple call to their physician. They know, or at least were told/taught during nursing school, that it is much harder to gain control of pain once it has escalated rather than to stay ahead of the increase in pain. Be your strongest advocate, Moonie. We stand behind you completely!! If you are not sure of some routine or some service you feel you should be receiving, ask.

Yes to the advice above about not letting the pain get severe before you ask for pain medicine -- and also to say, if the "as needed" delivery isn't controlling the pain well enough, or if the time limits of the medication (such as, only every 6 hours) let the pain increase too much before you can have more, Talk to your medical team about changing things up. MOST nurses will be alert to this and advocate for you, but some are passive and "just follow the orders" or are afraid of giving you too much. Pain meds can be given on a schedule (where you don't have to ask), Or a different pain med, or at shorter intervals, or a higher dose, or with "breakthrough" doses available -- or any combo of those 4 options -- or even frequent small intravenous doses via a machine that is controlled by you (and only you) but programmed so that you can't overdose (this is called a PCA pump: PCA = patient controlled analgesia).

We are all hoping for an update. Moonie thinking about you and praying that you are not in too much pain.
