Has anyone ever sued a hospital?

My Mom has been a patient at this system for many, many years. In fact, my father was at one time chief of staff at this hospital. I won't even go into how they screwed up his care 10 years ago. But in January they treated my mom twice for pneumonia. I took her to my little tiny hospital in northern Wi, turns out she had an extensive pulmonary embolism which has now done permanent lung damage. On Saturday, I got a call from the caregiver that she had agonizing leg pain. My brother in law took her to the ER, they took an xray and treated her for arthralgia, gave her a pain pill and sent her home. Got a call from the caregiver yesterday saying she was in pain and didn't look good. I told her to call 911, took her back to the ER, where they discovered she did indeed have a hip fracture. I am furious, but suing goes against everything I believe. Just wondering your thoughts and experiences. Sadly, I know that many hip fractures in debilitated little old ladies don't end well.
