Spent much of the day in the hospital !!

Early this morning it was so pretty that I thought I would sit out on the deck and watch the sun come up. Well I should have worn a pair of shoes or clogs or something. I stepped on a piece of splintered wood and it went right up and into my foot !! I said a few choice words that I would not say in front of my own mother. Then hobbled back into the house to see if I could get it out. I got part of it out but the rest was too deep. So off to the ER I go. Thank goodness I have had a recent tetanus shot. They had to numb my foot and actually cut that log out of my foot. They bandaged it up and sent me home several hours later. It really hurts now that the numbing agent has gone away. I wasted a whole darned day and didn't even get to drink my coffee. I am about starved to death because they didn't even feed me. I got an prescription for pain killer, didn't get it filled. I will just take Tylenol. I don't like to take much in the line of drugs unless I positively have to. Maybe I will be sorry but for now I will just have to suffer. DH is taking really good care of me right now. He's even fixing me supper. (reheated soup with toasted cheese sandwiches) I may hobble for weeks since he is being so sweet. Hmmm, I wonder if he does windows? LOL

Helen, Ouch!! ((Helen)) I am sorry you had to spend your day at the ER. Glad they got it all out and you are back home with you DH. Nice for him to take care of you, and if he does do windows, does he do them for hire? LOL

Inga, again, so many thanks! It's really too bad that Kansas doesn't plant the European Bird Cherry instead of the terrible Bradford pear which stinks like rotting plastic. The fragrance is wonderful and it's just as "showy" and as fast a grower as a Bradford. Or at least people should plant more beautiful crabapples. Both plants attract beneficial pollinators. Jaxondel, I've had my house since 2007, but gardened for the first time in 2009. I had no interest in gardening whatsoever, so I've always been "blind" to Nature's incredible beauty, too busy pulling all-nighters at work, being a workaholic, etc. We get very little biodiversity in my neighborhood, but last year I saw 3 sightings of a cardinal in my neighborhood. My dad is the direct opposite of me. He has always loved nature, organics and birdlife. His yard is filled with beautiful birds that none of his surrounding neighbors have. Well, yeah, I've not had birds go crazy with that tree yet. Must be my location, lol! But maybe with the combinations of my holly bushes and the tree they'll come. I have a 2010 Toyota Camry hybrid that has an sea greenish/blueish color to it that birds love to target more than any other car, I suppose because it is such a reflective waterlike color, so yes, I would notice if it got "bombed" hehe! But I will look for the berries for sure this year and hope to catch sight of some cool birds! By the way, Sanrosa, such beautiful, beautiful cacti!!! I was looking admiring your lovely garden with the roses, but wowwwwwwww! The blooming cacti is STUNNING. I've always loved cacti's unique comical shapes- very whimsical and fun but those flowers are a DREAM! Even if it's not roses please post the cacti too whenever you can! We pride the Rose Gallery in being a place for Tea and company! People have their cats, their pets, Boxo has had his fluffy Pom poms and the koi/water lilies, there's been bees here and all kinds of fun stuff. And Renee's lovely boy was here too and Rosemeadow's lovely daughter holding up a flower. Kids and gardens make great photos. Cheers, everyone! And Happy Mother's Day to all you Mothers out there. Yesterday was my border collie's birthday- Eluane got birthday candles on her pork tenderloin/tomato cake...I got the evening bday cake on video James had to help me with that. But unfortunately this year was so hot, it was impossible to stop her from panting in the daytime shots so this year's photos weren't as nice as last year. Garden shot was at my home church's little side chapel. Here is the famous Ward Parkway stretch with the classic homes and lots of big flowering trees. No European bird cherries but similar more romantic flowering ones like dogwood, more rare magnolias- style of gardens is classical unlike newer suburbia with generic bloomers like the Bradford pear. Still can't see roses here, maybe too much shade with the very old large trees. Next time I'll take more photos of ward Parkway. My home church is very beautiful and is all stone and is at Ward Parkway.

Advocacy... Mum's health "crashed" about 3years ago and she has been with me about that long. I have been to every appointment, every test, every surgery/recovery/rehabilitation. She didn't very much like my "intrusion" but it was clear to my brother and me that she was not capable of adequately relaying information to us. So... Fairegold, I had not realized your mother died. I'm so sorry. I know that every one has their time, but it is always a shock, and a relief, and a sadness when it happens. You were good to her; being good and kind to people carries a reward we often don't fully appreciate until they're gone. :) I have two things to offer: the actual medical services available to us are simply amazing. The "before" and "after" care, however STINKS. I have dealt with more nurses and doctors than I can count. Sadly, I have to say the quality of nursing is abyssmal; I made it a point to be polite and pleasant. But when they were unwilling to make time to discuss Mum's condition with me I lost whatever faith I had in the profession. When I watched a nurse drop an exam glove on the floor and then pick it up to PUT IT ON before changing Mum's urostomy I was horrified. "Were you planning on using that one?", I asked as she was preparing to do just that. She looked nervous and was even more nervous as I supervised the urostomy change... noting that is was done improperly. (I do it on average every 5 days, and have for 2 years now; I now realize I've FORGOTTEN more about the process than most RNs ever knew). The same nurse failed to raise the rails on Mum's bed and she got out of bed, confused. She fell hard, cracking her kneecap and badly spraining her wrist... all this followed a stroke. Why didn't the nurse have the presence of mind to realize a stroke patient doens't make good decisions and is a likely candidate for injury resulting from compromised decision making? HELLO? whatever happened to "common sense"? that's how "medical professionals" operate? Doctors. They're busy. They have a lot to juggle. Most have pathetic interpersonal skills. It's the rare jewel who has warmth, a sense of humor, and willingness to be direct and honest. Here's what we did: every day either my brother or I would visit Mum. We arrived at varying times of the day, That way, we knew all the staffers and had a chance to find a sympathetic one. We brought notebooks with us, and we took notes, jotting down the nurses' names, the doctor's name, the time of the visit, etc.. We noted whether or not the urostomy pouch was full, half full, empty... whenther or not she was simply left the sit, hooked to a Foley bag. We noted her cleanliness, if her hearing aids were in, and if the batteries were dead. We brought our digital cameras and took pictures. (Those pictures were a real "hit" when the social worker at the last "rehab." place proved difficult about discharging Mum after 5 weeks... she was "approved" for 8! nothing like a creeping skin condition all over her back to give 'em a case of "the worries", lol). Each of us called the doctors and requested information. We set up times to meet with them to discuss Mum and her condition/progress. Sometimes I did it, sometimes my brother did. Other times we did it together. We were polite, direct, and ON TIME. Being an advocate requires that you be PREPARED, informed, and as polite as you can be; have your questions prepared in advance if you're able. You have to be patient with staff and understand that they DO have a lot to manage on a daily basis, but when you're faced with something unacceptable you have to be willing to be steely-eyed, icy toned, and simply refuse to accept the usual litany of excuses. Believe me, nothing gets the attention of staff faster. And when staff has really gone above and beyond, you must say thank-you and do something kind. I can still the urologist's face when he saw Mum the first time. She weighed 84 lbs., was grey, slow, and sullen. He minced around the obvious reality, using "polite" phrases to avoid saying the obvious. I finally got out the chair, put my hands on his desk and looked him in the eye, "Look, doc., I am a busy woman. I have neither time nor patience for bulls!!t, get to the point.". He met my gaze and began the medical dictation of Mum's case... it wasn't good. He scheduled the next cystoscopy... when he saw her 6 weeks later, she had put on 12 lbs., had rosey cheeks, and he didn't recognize her. After the test, he spoke with me... told me I had done an amazing job with her, that he respected and appreciated my direct manner and willingness to pay attention to small details... as those are the things that make a difference when an elderly person faces a health crisis. He told me then that he had expected to learn of her death before that appointment.

Thanks very much. Today was much better. Her breathing is far worse, and she's getting RT treatments, but she seemed better, and the behavior of last night was gone. They did wind up giving her a Haldol (sp?) last night. My cousin came to visit and mother didn't want her there. Sigh. Linda is my close friend, but married someone Mother did not approve of (foreigner!), so Mother is not very tolerant. Sigh. So right now, I can't tell is she is better or not. Doc will probbaly be back by Tuesday. We'll know more by then, and he can probably look at her and her chart/tests with a fresh eye. When you see someone everyday, you lose perspective. I can't tell you all how much your kind words mean to me, especially at this time of the year. We are not religious people, and we don't have family right here, so it was fine for this to happen on the holidays. But it also meant that I couldn't call friends, etc. Tomorrow, Monday, I will check in with a couple of the people in my support group. Bless you all!

Vicky, I hope they put the "mend" on you soon! I have a friend who has MS and was having severe stomach pain for TWO YEARS. I'm not sure if the Drs. just assumed it was the MS causing the pain, so, oh well... or what, but FINALLY one doctor did a very simple test and found out she had an ulcer. WHO KNEW? Some meds and she was out of pain w/in a couple days. After TWO YEARS of suffering...

Sorry about you injury. Hope you feel better soon but you don't have to let "everyone" know until you get tired of the TLC. LOL!

At our hospital ER if you tell them you are hungry they will bring you a sandwich or something if you are allowed to eat.

I always get my pain prescription filled just in case I need it in the middle of the night. When I had bunion surgery, I woke up at 4 a.m. in excruciating pain and was so glad I had my prescription handy. I hope your foot heals quickly.

OUCH!!!!!! Sending healing thoughts your way.

Tell your DH you shouldn't be doing any type of housework for at least a month or two LOL Doctors orders from the KT.

That made my foot hurt just reading about it!

Yes, a foot injury can require lots of help from a "care giver." Do you have your "honey-do" list handy?

Hope it heals soon, but you don't have to mention it to you-know-who.

Ouch is right. I know what a piece of wood feels like to have cut out. I am surprised they didn't give you an antibiotic as well.

Oh how that must have hurt!!! Keep an eye on it and go to your doctor if it gets bad. Not fun, I know.

I once got a chunk of deck stuck way in my foot. Wow-did that hurt!!! I couldn't get it out, but DH did. Apparently it wasn't as deep as yours, but it did heal pretty quickly!

It makes me cringe just to hear about it. I had a wood sliver in my hand once and they are so hard to get out.

I say, act helpless for as long as DH is willing to care for you. These opportunities do come often - thankfully.

Oh Helen- if you wanted your windows done you should have gotten the splinter in your hand! Glad to hear that you didn't delay and had it taken care of. Now relax for the rest of the weekend.

LOL, you all made me laugh with your thoughts of me sitting on my pity pot so my DH could keep spoiling me. He really is pretty good to me anyway, but now he is being especially good. And I got to say, I am loving the he!! out of it !!
The doctor did give me a shot of antibiotics right away before they even starting carving that log out of my foot and then asked me if my tetanus was up to date, which it is. I just got a tetanus two years ago. What really hurt was the needle they stuck in there to numb my foot. Crikey !! I about came off that dang gurney they had me on. Tears were running down my face and into my ears. good grief Charlie Brown.

I redressed the hole and put some peroxide in it and rebandaged it real good and slipped a nice clean white sock on it. It really doesn't hurt all that much unless I step full on the foot. I guess I will just have to hobble around for a couple of days. But I will be taking a tylenol pm before I slip off to bed.

I really need to learn to wear shoes when I walk on that darned porch. But in the meantime, I am going to play the "poor little me" to the hilt. And DH already know I will, because he has been through similar times with me. LOL

My DGS Nate did that very thing on my deck at the cabin. His mom tried to remove it, but he ended up having to go to the emergency room too. I felt so sorry for him. It was a BIG sliver too. He was such a trooper.

Helen, sorry about your accident, hope you can walk without pain today. I am one of those people who never take prescription pain killers. I filled a prescription for them one once when I had a tooth pulled. It's still there in my medicine chest.

Ow! Ow! Ow! The only thing that hurt me more than a sliver in my foot was the day I mowed over a yellow jacket nest in the dirt and got stung. Slivers and stings hurt because they hit all those nerve endings in your skin.

Feel better!

We need our windows washed, but hate to part with the $250!

Grammahoney, I just hate the thought of a little one going through this. I always thought I was pretty tough, but that needle in my foot hurt more than that darn chunk of wood did.

Just got to love Goofy, huh. LOL The foot is quite sore, but not as bad as it was yesterday. I slept through the night okay. When I got up, I forgot myself and stepped squarely on that stupid foot !! OW OW OW !! But it's pretty good now. I will probably be wearing just a sock on that foot to church tomorrow. I have some pretty ones that go with the skirt and shirt I was planning to wear.

DH fixed me for breakfast, Cinnamon toast and orange juice and then asked if he could get me anything else. For lunch, he fixed me a chicken salad sandwich on a wheat roll with a sweet pickle and a handful of Lay's potato chips. I am trying to lose a bit of weight, but hey, you don't get this kind of service every day !! He is BBQing some chicken for supper tonight. I already had some potato salad in the refrigerator and he found some Bush's Grilling Beans in the pantry. Sounds like a plan to me.

I have just about finished reading "The Shack", but it's not getting any better. I hate to just not finish a book though. I should have it finished by tonight. Then I can put it down by the wood stove. LOL I think I am going to take full advantage of this and do lots of reading. I keep promising myself that I will take time soon. My friend up the street brought us raspberry muffins and a book for me to read today. It's called "This Side of The Sky" by Elyse Singleton. It sounds interesting. So, it shall be Muffins and a good book and me tomorrow. Ahhh this is the life. I wonder what DH will fix for us tomorrow? LOL

I got a splinter on the side of my foot the other week.
I didn't have anyone to help me or take care of me.

Next time I'll ask you to send your DH :o)

Just say the word Glenda, and I'll send him on our via Gray hound to you. He sort of cantankerous, but loves to cook and really is quite good at it too. He even did the vacuuming and a load of laundry. He draws the line at doing any sort of ironing though. LOL
