Pruning my Neglected Fig Tree
Comments (3)That tree will always be leggy and upright growing in that location. Pruning to half the size means cutting all the major branches at 8 feet from the ground. You won't have many figs next year, then succeeding years will produce more inconvenient figs. You might try putting weights on the new post-pruning growth and force the branches to grow sideways....See MoreWhen to prune brown turkey fig tree?
Comments (4)If Brown Turkey has a large Breba or 'first crop', I would wait until you've harvested that and then prune. Could be in June for you. If it is not a 'breba' or first crop fig, then you could start after the worst of winter is over, like most other fruit trees, in late February. Do not try to take too much wood in any one year, or you'll get a bunch of suckers from the base and more of a thicket. Try to make mostly thinning cuts, but you may have to head back a few of the tallest leaders. Don't 'flat top' the tree. Comments (2)I'm pretty active in the gardening community, and am often called on to give talks/demos about pruning - probably an outgrowth of the fact that experienced bonsai practitioners can prune in their sleep. It's a popular program to talk to a group at someone's home and actually use their trees to demonstrate pruning techniques and explain principles. One of the most oft asked questions is 'When can I prune?' My stock answer is 'Any time you have a sharp pair of pruners in your hand.' For major pruning chores: wounds close fastest if you prune in the spring before buds move. This also prevents the tree's moving stored energy to branches you then remove - thereby wasting it. If you want to avoid excessive suckering and water sprouts, limit your pruning to no more than 15-20% of the above-ground mass of the tree, 10% is better - unless the tree is small and you can also prune roots with a spade at the same time you prune the canopy, in which case you can remove more and avoid the suckering/water sprouts. It's difficult to be specific w/o knowing what your goal is. Are you rejuvenating a multi-stemmed tree/shrub - reducing the height of a single trunk tree - pruning for appearance by removing crossing branches or branches that don't enhance the trees appearance .....? Comments (4)1) Since I am happy with main crop figs only, I routinely prune 10' bushes to 18 inches (I don't want to pick fruit from tall trees on my hill). I will typically leave only 2-3 leaf nodes of current years growth on a any branch. So, you can prune them as much or as little as you want, to control size. If you are relying on Breba crop for your figs (formed on prior seasons wood)you can only prune lightly. 2) If the cold is not a problem, and the trees don't need protection, you can prune early Spring beefore budbreak. 3) If cold/freeze damages/kills portions of the tree, and you want wood for propagation, take it in the Fall. otherwise wait till you prune in late winter/early spring. See http://figs4fun.com and read the Festival of Fruit Handout for some basics. I hope to add accompanying pix soon....See MoreJanna Correa
