Challenging Family Room Design
Hi Everyone,
Any and all advice would be helpful for this room. My husband and I just purchased a new home and this is a room that is giving me so much trouble in terms of design! I am just stuck. It feels like grey overload with the grey walls, carpet and couch. I am also struggling with the wood burning stove.
What I am looking for is a new coffee table, and end tables, perhaps a consol table, window treatments, accent chair and some art work. I am just STRUGGLING. I am not tied to the rug or the consol under the TV, but the couch is staying as is the wall color. I am not able to move the TV as the other two walls also have windows. The crate will also be leaving the room in a couple of months.

Comments (35)Annie, thanks for the cabinet idea. it is really lovely. i don't have that much jewelry though, but maybe i could use those other drawers for gloves and socks, lol.. i am leaning towards getting rid of the vanity now, i agree with everyone, it seems funny to place it next to the dresser. what do you think of putting it in the 3-way mirror space? i have seen some 3-way mirrors sitting on top of vanities. they would not be full-length.. kind of like this pic which would you choose: 3-way full-length mirror, or vanity with smaller 3-way mirror in that corner? i can also just find another place for the vanity in my bedroom area, since i don't yet have a end table by my bed. maybe it is better since i think you are supposed to have natural light, is that right? so sad, we were not able to get the armoire i wanted today.. after DH drove 2 hours to pick it up, found out it was mis-measured and was way too big for our minivan. so the search continues......See MoreFamily Room, Great Room Design, Decor , HELP
Comments (6)It looks like the best thing is to start with a new 3 seat sofa. Since you have the TV above the mantle, we assume you want your seating positioned that way. --Yes, move the sofa forward to connect to the two focal points: the TV and wood stove.
--Can you paint the walls something other than gray? You have a massive gray sofa. Gray walls = too much depressing gray.
--Fill a tall basket with white birch logs to put on the hearth of the wood stove. Right now it's just a dark corner.
Metal and Wood Basket, Round · More Info--Your console is fine. Lower the TV, though, and remove all the "stuff" from the top of the console. Alternatively, run long low shelves wall to wall across the window wall and put the TV over that. Fill the shelves with books.
--Add some art work to the room near the windows--maybe blown-up family pictures and original art work over the sectional.
