Comments (10)My take is on the pototoes...milk will curdle when boiled...that's all that happened..if using milk instead of the "Fuller" fat...I make a white sauce with flour and butter/oil on the stove top..using milk as a thickener..and bring and there is no need to "boil" it to thicken..if your roux was properly cooked through...the "sauce" will thicken just as you start pouring in the liquid... And the brownies..here's my never fail recipe.. I use butter instead of oil now..and cut the sugar to 1.5 cups..with no ill effects. Brownies 2 1/4 c white sugar 2/3 c cocoa 1/2 c chopped nuts or chips or both (optional) 1 1/4 c flour 1 t baking powder 1 t salt 1/2 c oil 4 eggs 1 t of vanilla or other flavoring In a large bowl beat oil and sugar, add eggs and vanilla. In a seperate bowl mix dry ingredients, add to wet. Mix until completely blended. Fold in nuts and/or chips. Bake in lightly greased 9x13 pan at 350F for about 30 minutes, until set all the way through. Mix dry ingredients thoroughly. Add 1/2 c oil and 4 slightly beaten eggs. Mix until completely blended. Spread batter in lightly greased 9x13 pan. Bake at 350F for 30 minutes or until set. Cool in pan....See MoreKumquat Failing? Not Failing?
Comments (6)Looks to me you might be in a serious need of a repot...Too, if you can't provide all the sunlight like you once did, it is common for a tree that size to drop branches, twigs and leaves to find a way to survive for such little sun...It can not support all that growth on much less sun. This happens to one of mines once in a while after a great growth year and then it will do that once you rob it of it's happiness.. You soil concerns me now that it will not dry out as frequyently as it once did in lots of warmth and sun... Take a lokm at the roots and examine the mix and please tell us what they look like..I always look to the roots first if bugs are not doing it... I am sorry it is goiung through this, it stinks to be quite blunt. Been there done that. I have one just like it and I can't wait until it gets lots more sun soon..It went from a 4 foot full 3 feet wide lush canopy to about 20 leaves left and no branches..Disgusting for me in my eyes( The best soils are the ones that come as close to 'nonlimiting' as possible. The one property of soils that presents the most limitations is the amount of water they hold at container capacity. Container capacity is the measure of how much water a soil retains after it was fully saturated and just stopped draining. If parts of the soil are completely saturated and devoid of air, the saturation limits root function and can cause root diseases, usually fungal in nature. Soils based on a very high %s of fine ingredients (peat, compost, coir, composted forest products, topsoil, fine sand ...... hold more water than most of us consider conducive to good root health. Ideally, the particles a soil is made of would be large enough that they can't hold water in the spaces between the particles. This means that roots always have access to the air they need to drive root function/metabolism, no matter where the roots are located in the pot....See MoreEpic Garden Failures
Comments (8)It's all about the learning curve, I see. I made Ingrid's mistake of not understanding how much amendment the soil in my garden needed, producing possibly the most epic of all my failures. If Ingrid and I averaged our two soils we might do nicely, but that's not how gardens work. I've also made Molly's mistake of not thinking of flowering times when I planted flowers for combined effect. Nik's conditions are hard, and the only good thing I can say about them is that his garden is going to be distinctive because he's forced to choose plants that will grow there, and they'll have a particular character. We have a few areas where our predecessors piled rocks. DH didn't like the idea of them as refuges for snakes and had a couple of loads of topsoil dumped over them. Since then they've been valued parts of the garden, since they're the only zones we have which are actually free draining. Marlorena and John, thanks for the suggestions. I looked into 'Apple Blossom', as being the most likely, but the clematis I was was white, early, large, and looked like a C. montana type. So the obvious occurred to me,and I searched for a white Clematis montana, and found one. I think that's the plant I saw. I may be looking for potential planting sites in my wood for clematis and a white Lady Banks, though this last will have to be propagated starting next fall. I don't usually take cuttings of my monstrous climbers, as I don't know where I might put them....See MoreEPIC Fail with paint! please Help!
Comments (2)You can't just remove a chair rail, paint over it, and expect it to look perfect. The walls need to be patched, sanded, and prepped for new paint. Unfortunately, yes you will have to repaint but first you need to properly prep that area....See More- 8 years ago
