I need help with my formal living room. Please....
Comments (12)Congratulations on your new house! It looks lovely and we're all going to have such fun watching you decorate it. I'm with the others here... I'd get a big rug and put the front feet of your sofa and stuffed chairs on it, pulling them out away from walls. This will give you a nice conversational space in front of the fireplace. I also think your current rug is way too light for your furniture. Maybe it can go in your kitchen or a bedroom? I don't know your budget, but I got my huge rug for $50 through Craigslist, by watching it like a hawk and replying to the ad about 10 minutes after it was posted (he got tons of responses at that price but luckily mine was first). The rug turned out to be perfect and in brand new shape except it just needed a shampooing, which I gave it the minute I got home. I think if you have animals or a young family you might not want to put too much $$ into a rug you have to worry over constantly. That's how I feel about it, anyway. But if you've got lots of dough to burn I'm sure you'll be able to find something that makes your heart swoon. When it comes to accessorizing that big space with the tall ceilings, I'd look at inspiration pictures. The Living Rooms thread in our Gallery contains several hundred beautiful pictures. I like to browse it with a specific question on my mind, such as "what should I put on my coffee table?" or "what's a good way to arrange pictures on the wall?" I will get good ideas and know just what to do in 5-10 minutes of browsing the pictures for ideas. We've got threads for just about any kind of room in the Gallery. Close this thread and click on the Gallery links... one is top-ish right, and one is at the bottom. If you see pictures you love, you can save copies to your computer....See MoreFormal Living and Formal Dining Area
Comments (22)I rarely say this, and hate to criticize the beautiful rug, but it is too big for your space. It looks like it butts up to the hearth and possibly to the column wall. You need anywhere from 12-18" of floor exposed at the hearth side, and the same on entry side for a bit of a breather before stepping onto the rug. The sofa and chairs look like they're testing the water with their toes before getting in. If you can't exchange the rug for the next smaller size down, you might check into having the length reduced and re-binding it. If that's not possible, you should at least take advantage of it to anchor the seating. Center a coffee table with the firebox opening. Pull the sofa to within 18" or less of the table and bring the chairs up to it as well. Their placement will depend on the door swing from the French doors. This will also open a larger passage to get around the sofa into the dining room. I'm guessing you've centered the sofa with the French doors, and that's OK. I do advise drapes for the dining room with matching roman shades on the French doors. Add art you love at the mantel (no larger than the firebox opening) and try your mirror in the dining room or in your entry/foyer. Bay window drapes can close or be stationary...See MoreWhere did I go wrong?! Decor for a formal living room w/ pics
Comments (25)Well anything could be changed out if you don't like something about it. But is it mainly the wall color you don't like? Easiest IMHO to change that. Go with something less contrasty with the other colors in the room. More beige. I had the same problem many years ago when I moved into my first house. I took a lot of time carefully choosing what I thought was the ideal wall color. My dad was visiting helping me get the house ready. He painted the whole room while I was at work. I came home to the "pepto bismol" room. And I could not really repaint after all that work my dad did for me. That's actually when I first started hanging out on this forum, trying to figure out how to make it less of a problem. So if you can't or really don't want to repaint, the other approach is to fill the room with some accents and more colors similar to the wall color. Something gold or yellowish. You have a lot of blue, which is the contrasting color, which only serves to highlight the wall color. Since your art has an oriental vibe, ever thought about shoji screens for the smaller windows? I wouldn't sweat the proportion of things, that can often appear off on the standard quick photo shot folks take for advice on here. Same can be said for the color of the walls. But you mention quite a bit about not liking it. Overall I LOVE your room!...See MoreFormal Living Room/Sitting Room Area Layout
Comments (5)Oh lucky you! I would LOVE a separate living room. Consider how you want to use the space. Preferably, something other than "a pretty place for people to see when they walk in before they go to the family room." While that's fine if that's what you really want it to be, it has become the reason people are (unfortunately, in my view) eliminating "formal" living rooms in new homes. It's SO nice to have an away room, which this could be for you. So, conversation? Reading? Any musicians in your family? How about board games? In my house this would be the reading/conversation/music room, so I would furnish it with 4 comfy chairs in a circle with a center table, maybe a bookshelf or two and a piano. What you do with it depends on the space you have....See MoreRina
