What should I make this area ? Formal living or a coffee spot ?
Comments (4)Since I am a Realtor, I go into other people's houses all the time LOL. Formal living rooms are now often used as something more relevant to people's lifestyles. I called them Flex rooms. They're handy to the kitchen, it's easy to keep an eye on little ones, and you can use them for whatever phase of life you are in. I've seen them used for playrooms, offices, craft and sewing rooms, cozy gathering places, etc. Fit the room to your own preferences. Very cool inviting space by the way!...See MoreHelp with formal living area
Comments (41)Tho' hunting has never been a part of my life I find my friends collection of mounts beautiful in their own way. He has a garage full and that is where he spends a good portion of his time. I think they'll be great in this room but I wouldn't add too much furniture. Will it be just the two of you in the room usually? Then, I'd go for two really comfy leather chairs, a great rug, table with lamp, and some art on the walkway wall. IMO, your deer heads are preferable to contrived art marketed to match decor rather than pull your heartstrings....See MoreFormal Living Area Design Ideas
Comments (5)I would find one or two large pieces of art for that wall. Then fill out the seating as calidesign suggests, so that people can sit facing one another -- be sure that the rug is large enough to encompass the whole seating area, and you might try to pick up some colors from your art to break up all the neutrals a bit. You could even make your second couch a bit colorful, with the art above it, so that the color and warmth is integrated into the whole space....See MoreMove formal dining room to formal living room.
Comments (11)My questions are: Do you use a dining room? For sit-down dinners, I mean. Do you use a living room? It's certainly thinkable to reconfigure these rooms. Serving and clearing up in a dining room that is farther from the kitchen is a little less convenient than when it's adjacent, although a full-grown butler's pantry could include a dishwasher and sink along with storage for the best china, flatware, and glassware (a very traditional layout in a large home). But if you don't use a dining room now, you probably won't in the future. And is your living room mainly for show (and receiving the pastor, etc.)? So many of us essentially live in our family rooms (which might be the den in your current layout) and only use the official living room for special occasions. Sometimes a family room that is open to the kitchen, plus a den for quiet and privacy, makes the most sense. If expanding the kitchen is the top priority and you don't actually use the living room, this could make sense. Or a living room-dining room combination might make sense. But please think carefully about how you actually live in your house....See MoreShannon Ggem Design
