Design Dilemma Paint Exterior

siding, shutter, and foundation colors?

We just purchased this home on a beautiful property, nearly 3 acres with a pond in the back. It desperately needs a new paint job. The brick is in great condition, but the aluminum siding needs to be painted, as well as the concrete foundation in the back. It looks pretty rough now from the back (the cable wires hanging will all be removed) but we know there is so much potential!

What colors would you recommend for siding, shutters, and foundation? They need to go well with the brick and all of the green surrounding the property. I am partial to neutrals, but also love a deep blue (though wonder if that would compete too much with the rural/green surroundings). Thanks in advance for your ideas!

The color of the aluminum siding is pretty. I'd think about re-painting it the same color. You could go with blue, if the trim is white.

What ever color you choose, remove the shutters. Think about removing the arched sections on the porch. I don't think you need a railing. The porch is at ground level. So I would remove the arches, the posts and the railing and put in beefy posts (twice the size of the current ones.)

blue will not compete. look in nature. blue sky, and all the tall green trees.

i think a nice medium/dark blue w/your brick would be very pretty. you could also choose a shade of green. I hate the siding color that's currently there.

The shutters on the front window, under the porch, are way out of proportion. remove them. if the shutters can't completely close over the windows, they shouldn't be there. it actually makes the front of your house look very crowded. your front is similar to this one. look how removing the shutters opens it up. I don't care for this yellow, but the smaller windows on the left look better w/o shutters.

Ditto the gray selection. I love a gray cape cod . . . and depending on the brick you can do light/dark etc. and some trend towards blue and others don't - lots of flexibility there. White trim and black shutters and charcoal gray roof (we have Moire Black and it is a great charcoal - not too dark or too light and goes with everything). I think a red brick foundation with buff mortar is the most classic look you can find - and unlike SpringtimeHomes - I think it is beautiful - much better than ugly brown brick ;). I am a classicist though and Springtime is not - we absolutely do not share the same aesthetic. I would guess with a cape cod you and I have a similar aesthetic . . .

If you remove the awning, you will need to replace it with something else, because your house really needs something over that front door. I think an earthy color on the foundation would ground it. Maybe a brownish color. Is there any brown in the brick? If so pick a brown color from the brick, or the color of the grout in the brick.

I agree with Celery. My choice would be black with your siding color and brick. I would remove the shutters from the lower window since it's much too large for them. The double windows in this house are wrong for shutters, but it gives you an idea of the siding color with black...and some brick.

Thanks! I really appreciate the different color recommendations and the shutter comments. Would you recommend removing all shutters in front or just those under porch?

That last green color is so surprising but actually really interesting! Could be fun given our large pond out back. (It reminds me of a lake house color) I also like the charcoal/warmer gray color and the blue is bold and interesting. I have seen that color on a lot of new construction and hope that it isn't a fad that will look very year-specific. We may want to sell in about 10 years.
