TV console decorating is nearly impossible...

I just can’t get it to look right. I have googled & googled & still not satisfied with my look. I can’t get the “rectangle” effect that google mentions......The “my happy place” sign covers all my cords & outlets completely...so I like it there but I can’t get anything around it to work....this is hard. Should I just start all OVER with Aquas & Green again?

Comments (21)I think that with people like your neighbour you really have to put your foot down. You do what you can practically do (not using ear phones) and then you tell them that you have made some changes and that is all you can do. If you continue to appease a him he will continue to make demands and wants to rule the building. Perhaps you are an easy target. I moved into a place and after 20 years of apartment living and never having a neighbour complain about my noise, my new downstairs neighbours started complaining about my noise. That was that my tv was too loud and they could hear it in their lounge under mine and in their bedroom. The night the wife came up to complain I had the volume on 4 when 2 is silent. I couldn't hear it in the next room of my own apartment. I moved the tv away from the wall and then next day told them what I had done. However, I then added - I have done all i can do. My television is not at an unreasonable volume and I have to be able to live in my home. If it continues to be a problem then you may have to contact the body corporate (as they own their apartment) and the owners of my apartment (as I rent which i think also explains their power feeling) and organise to have the sound proofing improved in the floors (which are floor boards with carpet). Other than that I do not think an indepenent body would think the volume of my tv was unreasonable. I really got the idea that these people were going to keep coming up with things if I didn't put my foot down. They did it all in a very nice way - but this is often passive aggressive behaviour to get their own way. So don't get pushed around. Ps they haven't complained since. But I also doubt they want to fork out money to fix the sound proofing. The only thing now is that I notice their sound more - one being the sound of the husband talking on the phone and they both irritate the hell out of me now. Oh yes prior to this complaint they complained about my son's basket ball hoop in the common garden area and their cat bullies my cat all the time and attacked me when I tried to stop it coming in to my home after my cat so I had to get a tetnus shot and go on antibiotics. When I origanally told them about what had happened with their cat their was no offer to pay my medical bills. So I am glad that I then set them straight and made it clear that I was not going to put up with their constant nit picking. They have been super nice since but I now don't want a bar of them. Comments (125)linelle -- I do understand where you're coming from, but for how we live etc, it's better to not bring the piano next to the kitchen table. If we were all adults, I think it would be a good choice. But my kids are 5 and 9, and they have little friends etc. It's our only kitchen/dining table and the farthest I could move it away is 2 feet from the piano...the piano juts out more than the buffet; it's a shallow buffet, 17" deep, and the back is finished, but the piano is 24" deep. So in pictures I do think it would look better, but in practice it would put the dining table right in the middle of the doorway into the kitchen, which would probably not be a good choice. As far as conflict over who uses what and when, that's never been a problem. DH may be stubborn in some ways, but he's a considerate person to live with. graywings -- over the fireplace would mean looking up to watch tv. I like your idea of in front of the fireplace, I am going to run that one by DH. As much as we do like the fp, most days where we live you aren't allowed to burn anything anyway. I can't remember the last time we had a real fire, I have candles in there that I light -- creates a nice mood. You're probably right about keeping just one color on the wall. coll_123 -- I like the ladder shelf idea too. When I get closer to being able to re-do the room I'll look for something like that. My DH said that he really wants a product that is meant to hold components though, so that may be a hard sell. Karenseb -- yes the tv would be too high if over the fp -- the mantle is over 5' tall. Really don't want to mess with changing that, especially if we may move in a few years. k9Arlene -- thanks for the vote of confidence :-) I hope I responded to everyone, I've really appreciated all the ideas and thoughts, especially the critical eyes -- it's challenging to think outside the constraints after living here 13 years. Our home is small and modestly sized, it's not in a hot neighborhood where people do awesome (ie expensive) custom things to make the small spaces work (and if they do, it's often at a loss if/when they sell). I have other outstanding home projects to complete, but DH agreed that once they were finished we could look into re-doing the living room -- like paint and the shelving/layout, everything. Apparently these TVs not only record what's said in your living room, they sell it to third parties. Of course, they're doing it for marketing purposes, but it could become even more nefarious. VERY 1984. Of course, my students were more shocked by the fact that our cell phones monitor exactly where we've been (even providing a map and time stamps!). Comments (29)You live in such a fantastic location! One of my kids recently moved to OBX, is also in a kind of small place, has some mismatched hand-me-down furniture and a tight budget. You might try the Ikea in Virginia or College Park, Maryland. Perhaps one of those is closer to you. If I were you I would remove the bookcases, get a few of those ikea fiskbo photo frames and hang those alongside and/or above the tv. I think you might like a few larger pieces of art on that wall rather than a lot of little things on the bookshelves. It would give the visual appearance of less *stuff* in the room. You should have lots of opportunities to take some gorgeous photos to go in the frames. Or you could frame fabric you love, get some kind of downloadable art from etsy, calendar pages if they're the right size, all kinds of things. If you like watercolors that Waterlogue app is pretty cheap. You could get some paper and colored pencils and color in some geometric shapes and frame that. I'd maybe put a large tile or something on top of the umbrella stand and use it as a makeshift table beside the pink chair, handy to put a drink on it or something. I'd get rid of the table currently beside the pink chair (move the chair further from the front door) and get rid of the end table between the futon and the front door. Or I'd get rid of the two end tables and move the table currently beside the pink chair to a spot alongside the futon. I'd get rid of one or two of the lamps and either the coffee table or the ottoman. You can get some pretty cheap floor lamps at ikea, and one of those would take up a lot less space probably than the end table. I think my home is cute, my furniture matches, I have window treatments and art I love on the walls. At this point in my life I think I could trade it for a small place on the OBX full of mismatched hand-me-down furniture........and paddleboards, kayaks, surfboards, kiteboards and bicycles. I found an easel that didn’t elevate the sign & “BAM”...I think it helped. Thoughts..anyone? Is it getting there...or something else I can try???
