Could you have some recessed light added to give you some more light?

Recessed lighting is on our wish list for this room and another room in our house. :)

If you're holding off on having recessed lighting installed, what about some cute wall sconces mounted above your sofa? There a tons of options for plug in ones if you don't want to have an electrician out.

Sofa table with lamps and a round mirror behind where hubby/kiddo are sitting, and big art on left wall. I'd pull the rug out more into the room if you can. and have the chairs sit on the edge also. Just an example...

I would do art vs the mirror, and add floor and table lamps.

Lovely room! The first thing I would like to do is scoot the sectional away from the walls to accommodate some lamps and appropriate décor. It appears you have ample room to do that. Your instincts are telling you the mirror isn't the best choice. Art work is nearly always a better choice for walls over sofas. Are you open to moving the sectional out and using sofa tables and lamps?

If you're economising and already have the mirror, put it on the wall that faces the window. This will give a "double window" effect and more light on that side of the room.

While it's always wonderful to choose art first and create a room around it, since you already have your furnishings, here's a selection of art works in a palette that will work for the room. Use them as inspiration with your own choices of subject and style. (It is hard to tell what color your walls are. I'm going with blue, cream from the sofa, brown floors.)

Everyone's main suggestions seem to be more lighting and art. Whether you do wall sconces and art or a sofa table behind one side with lamps and art is up to you.

Honest question to Houzz group: sofa tables between the back of a sectional and the wall seem really odd to me. I can't imagine lounging back & not worrying about me or tall husband (or a kid) knocking lamps or whatever is sitting on it over. Also, wouldn't the table inevitably end up digging into the wall / damaging paint and drywall? Are these actual issues??

Sarah - I've had a sofa table/lamps for years and not once has anyone knocked off the lamps nor has the table dug into the walls. I do put nonslip furniture pads under the legs of the sofa to ensure that it doesn't move.

Lindsay - Your room looks great so far. I agree with other posters...a more colorful rug, pillows with color and texture, one large piece of colorful artwork behind one side of the sofa, and a sofa table with lamps behind the other side.

If I went the sofa table route, would it need to be the same length as the sofa? The couch is 9ft long. I have 3 kids (5, 3 and 1) so I worry little about lamps on a table or just lots of stuff ending up in the space behind the couch of the tale doesn’t run the full length.

Housegal - thank you for including throw pillows! I have pillow inserts but I’ve been so indecisive on what covers to get. I like the examples you provided.

If you wish to run a table the full length of the sofa section, I recommend using a "shelf" on brackets to achieve the length you want. You will want to provide spaces where lamp cords can escape to the plug.

Patricia - I just read the tutorial you posted. That sounds perfect for my level of handy! :) thank you! Do you think it’s best to put the table behind the side that faces the tv?

Lindsay, I like the table behind either side. I would likely choose according to availability of elec plugs. Glare on the tv is always a consideration, so three way lamps give you that dimmer effect at night. Lucky you for handy! Me too.

If you need more lighting and can't do recessed lights at the moment, we suggest trying an arc lamp or floor lamps to add light to the room. Also we would skip the mirror and add art. Here are some designs to help:

Working full time with 3 little ones tends to prolong my projects. we built the faux sofa table and found some art and lamps. I got throw pillows for the couch (The covers haven’t arrived yet for 3 of them).

Do you guys think all 4 feather pictures are too crowded between the lamps or will those look ok? I was considering blowing up some pics of my kids for the other wall If i can find other art that coordinates. Because the two walls are perpendicular to each other, does the art need to be a similar size on the other wall?

Love the sofa "table" and lamps! Use your pretty feather art on the wall over the other side of the sofa. Mount them with the bottom of the frames to sit about 8" above the sofa and equally spaced apart. Move your lamps in toward each other a bit more. Use a single piece of art between the lamps. Great job!

Maybe one of these on the large wall would add some texture and contrast to tie in your neutrals and warm walls.
