Help pls, Staking problems and plant id (3 pics)
Comments (8)Thanks, Marie. I can't get out much now, but I can search the web. This was a matter of exigency because I don't stake unless there is no other way. I have a bunch of hoop stakes but didn't want to use them on this. I don't have anything natural that is strong enough to hold anything but small plants that don't need to be staked. I also have a green heavy nylon twine, but I didn't want it to cut into the stems and bruise them. I've got regular old twine. If I hadn't been using the rebar I have, I would use that because it wouldn't show as much. Over on the antique rose forum, we use a lot of rebar. The roses soon hide it, and I asked my son to pick me up two 5' sections so I can tie a huge rose back (use my dk nylon loosely for that) so it doesn't hang over the sidewalk. I love bamboo, and you can buy long sections here, but it's expensive if you want a lot. I wanted to use raffia and make things for the garden with it. What I really want to do is make some small fence or trellis out of some of my white birch branches I've been saving, but I don't have a good plan in my head. That twig furniture, maybe somebody on Freecycle would give me some branches for more aesthetic staking that I can tie with raffia. I have some of my own books about that but nothing about stakes in particular. I'll check around the web. Thanks for taking the time to respond. I'm still cutting it back after it blooms and think it will still lean. I'll look for some of the things you mentioned. It looks awful, I know that, but landscape tape is gentle. I could have tied it in smaller sections, but wanted it done and over with. I'm more concerned about saving the blooms than how it looks I'll split the part near the sidewalk off, and get more plants out of it and put that somewhere else or give it away. It just spread too much closer to the sidewalk and it's supposed to be at the back of the border. The gypsophilia probably won't come back next year. At this point, I'm more concerned with how to pinch out those plants right so maybe I won't have to stake them. I do know when and how to pinch back my phlox. Heck I could have used a couple tomato cages further back, then try to less obtrusively tie the ones in front to that, a few in a bunch. Never thought of it....See MoreY Stakes: Can't live without them!
Comments (43)Mindy, here's another thought....I thought clips DH thought hose clamps. Slip these on and tighten on the rebar, make the loop in the wire a little looser so these can also be slipped on, being a little looser the whole arm is moveable but won't drop below the clamp. Put two or more arms on and they can be moved in different directions. More clamps and more arms added as needed. Ohhhh, the possibilities. How about you sending the tip in to FG do it with my blessing, it's just not my thing :o). I come up with crazy ideas at times like how to make a temporary support to train my golden hops up a cherry tree, crazy glue and twine LOL. Now back out to my weed patch, Annette...See MoreTomato ladders and staking systems
Comments (25)I use bamboo poles tripod style with a ridge pole. I tie my tomatoes with plastic grocery bags folded from top to bottom until it is about one inche wide. Then I cut the band into about one inch strips. Each strip when unfolded makes a loop. I cut the loop and tie my tomatoes with the one inch strips. They work very good. The tripod makes it easy to cover when the weather gets cold. I had tomatoes covered on stakes that froze while the ones on the tripod didnÂt because there is more ground underneath to keep the tomatoes warm. See my tomato supports and my photoÂs. Comments (11)Hi Lauren, I bought mine years ago and can not remember the exact price but think around $400 each (?). I might be way off though. I ordered mine from Carolina Rustica online. They do not have all the Johnston Casuals options listed on their site as far as I know. So, you would have to get all the item numbers from the JC site or call before placing the order with Carolina Rustica. However, at this time there may be more online dealers. If I remember correctly I did find a local dealer but they were more expensive (I think). I have remodeled two houses since the kitchen in my old house...still using the same barstools here though. This is what the Chabis finish looks like in real life. I have real brass as well as bronze and stainless and this finish mixes well....See Morekali_deere
