Open Kitchen/Living Room Dilemma

Hello,

My Wife and I are moving from our very large 2 bedroom apartment in Chicago to a much smaller (but decent by New York size) one bed in Manhattan. We've already downsized a lot and have figured out we'll need a new couch and dining room table as well as a new bedroom storage system. We've never had an open kitchen before and would advice on using the space effectively with what we have. All the other furniture other than the couch and dining table are approximations of things we already have and would like to keep. 1. Is there a better use of space or more interestingly designed layout than what we're thinking (attached)? 2. We know we need a piece that can function as a desk/dining table/counter space. Ideally with a drawer or shelf space in it somewhere while still allowing people to sit on three sides. Can anyone think of some decently priced pieces that might fit the bill? 3. We don't have a ton of space for storage in our bedroom with our Queen bed so we're thinking about doing something like whats attached, are there better ideas that we're not thinking of that wont make the bedroom feel horribly crowded?

I'd redo the living room layout

in small spaces, sometimes the bigger you go the better you get..when comes to incorporating all kinds of storage

so. I'd try to do some sort of a wall system incorporating your TV, books, working space even. whatever else you need to there on one wall..the longer one I guess, with no windows.

sofa goes betwwen two windows, and the whole conversational shebang you need there..a chair, a coffee table//ottoman, a side table..angle the chair as on your scheme..

you'd be able to turn the TV a bit my guess is, for movie nights and all, if you'd feel the angle is still too wide between TV and you.

dining area gets to be more floating (consoles/sofa tables look good behind sofas..dining tables are too high for that, you won't like neither dining nor sofa..and also food might fall onto sofa..would happen to me lol)

I'd make it (a dining table)round probably..with a possibility of additional leaf-never hurts..but in any case, it'd go next to the kitchen(obviously)..approximately where currently window with curtains is. more defined dining area. that can still be maneuvered around

tell us your style-and we can be more helpful with pointing out pieces/stores to look at

as for decently priced..whatever your style is, always check vintage too. Takes time and patience but one is rewarded in the end

as for your bedroom I personally love books in bedroom..I might go for lighter colors/same as future walls color in order to make shelves less obtrusive, more built in look

don't forget lamps -floor ones, table ones etc.

rug/s in living will help to define different areas

that's my very general take

nice apartment with all the challenges..Manhattan sounds exciting! love Mahhattan. Have fun putting your new place together

PS you know website "Apartment Therapy"? they also have couple books published. Great sourse of inspiration for small spaces

Mike, you have a nice space there. Lots of light and plenty of cabinets for a first home! I think with a good paint job, your cabinets will look very nice. My only suggestion is that if budget allows, you do the floor after the paint job (less prep of the floors!). However, if there is only enough money for one of the three at this time, I think you are right in doing the floors before moving in. Rantontoo's point about the floor being raised is a valid one. I am sure the installers will tear out the laminate, but nonetheless make sure there is enough room under the dishwasher. You could box it in and then if it ever needs to be removed, ruin your new floors (pre or site finished). Also today's refrigerators are super sized and with a new floor, there could be a height issue as well.

@Patricia, you have a good point. I think I will definitely want to consult a designer to get their perspective from an aesthetics/space usage mindset. I do have a large media room in the lower level where my big screen is, so I figure if I ever have a large group to watch a game, etc., that is likely where I will need the most seating. The upstairs could then be used more generally for entertaining. My dining table seats 10 and moving it into living area would allow me to add chairs on either end. The addition of a 9-10’ Island would add seating as well. At worst, the family in its current footprint could snugly fit a ~6-7 person sectional and a chair. I think with an additional ~2-3’ feet in length and width, I should easily be able to fit a sectional in there as well as 1-2 accent chairs. Plus if I’m entertaining there would be plenty of space to gather at the end of the kitchen where the new bar would be. These pictures are not by any means exactly what I would do (I used a trial version and stock colors/cabinets), but should help give a sense of layout.

I will look to see if I have a floor plan, but if not, how would i go about creating one for you. I know I sound like an idiot but obviously I am clueless as to this kind of stuff and wish my husband would just let me hire a decorator lol! However, he just now gave me another big fat NO to hiring one lol! So needless to say, I am going to have to learn how to do this on my own and asking for help, however annoying I may be, is the only thing I know to do! So I apologize in advance for my ignorance! Just looks like only 1 person can sit on it the way it is! Unless all the pillows are removed. Don't get me wrong, I love decorative pillows. I have 5 on my lounger sofa. Everyone but me takes at least 1 or 2 pillows off to sit/lounge on it. If you are ok with people taking the pillows off, then it's ok. But maybe have a basket on each side of the sofa for storing them.
