Pine Bark for 5-1-1 mix new bag
Comments (6)Something is going on here and I don't know what :D Sorry I left out the garden lime, I kept getten bitten my these mosiqtos. But I made my new batch. My camera ran out of juice before I could of taken close ups with the quater and stuff. But in the image is my new home for my Hot peppers. The perlite was from MG, kind of small but the best I could do at that store. BTW: that Pine Bark Mulch brought me back memories when I was a kid and smelled new mulch, my folks used to get their garden supplies from therre.. The local agway was only about 1/4 mile down the road back then. Also ironicly the store I went angd got this at is the farm from the Movie "signs" was filmed with Mel. Edit: I meant to say Left out the garden lime from the photo but I put the estimated amount in. Also As Ed stated above I added more peat moss plus was dealing small perlite. The only way to tell is the photos when the peppers come out. Also the bags shown in the photo were 7 Gallon Fabric from Viagrow 5 bags for $20 and the white are 5 gallon vinyle reflective bags that I purchased for (10) for $10 online. Comments (2)When you use particles that large, mixed with small particles, the medium pretty much retains the properties of the fine particulates. Drainage (flow-through rates) and the height of the PWT will remain almost the same as they were if you were using only the finer ingredients, though o/a water retention will be reduced. All the bark does, in addition to reducing o/a water retention, is reduce the amount of space in the medium that is available for root colonization, which would have to be logged as a negative in the list of cause/effect relationships. Comments (3)If you are just going to pot-up then you can do it now. Potting up involves minimal root disturbance - taking out the circling roots, taking out a bit of the old mix all around the root ball and potting with fresh mix in a larger pot. Repot involves removing the old mix, good amount of root pruning and starting with fresh mix. For tropicals the bes time is late June and around that time when the plant is growing vigorously. For temperates the best time is when they break dormancy in spring. Hibiscus and gardenia will have some yellow leaves as days become shorter. So I would not be too concerned with that. Unless, of course, a lot of leaves are turning yellow and dropping. I do not know much about hydrangeas. They will be going into dormancy in a few weeks and so I would be inclined to leave it alone. You can probably spray some fungicide....See MoreGritty Mix and 5-1-1 Bark and Bark Substitution
Comments (3)Good points about needles. I found another thread on here that answered those questions for the most part. I'll just keep that as mulch. Can the bark be too fine when in the gritty mix or 5-1-1? Like I mentioned I can shred it myself, but it gets pretty fine. After that I can just sift out the big chunks. The nearest orchid grower is about 2 hrs away, I'm probably going to check them out when I have time. Until then I have some plants that are in desperate need of repotting lol. TIA!
