Gritty Mix and 5-1-1 Bark and Bark Substitution

Hello,

I've been reading a lot lately on this and other forums about the different inorganic mixes. I've been able to successfully find all the ingredients. However, the bark I did find was the large pine nuggets. For my first experiment I ran them through my wood chipper/shredder. If I'm understanding it correctly It's the larger sizes that are more problematic than the smaller ones. Is this correct? The shredder did just what it was suppose to and shredded it quite small.

My next part of the question is could I substitute shredded pine needle straw for the bark? It seems to break down very slowly, but I'm not quite sure what's it's made out of and if it would have the same properties as the bark would. The main reason I'm asking this is because I can rake up basically as much as I want under the red pines around my house.

I'm really excited to start trying these mixes out for all my house plant and containers!

Thanks!

Travis
