Happy birthday Sue (mtnester)!
Comments (11)Thanks so much, everybody! Annie, I DO have time to post today, because the partying was done last night, when DH and I attended the bar mitzvah celebration of a cousin's twin sons. To keep this food-related: after munching on appetizers, we dined on filet mignon, Chilean sea bass, asparagus, roasted potatoes, salad, and fruit-nut bread. For dessert, there were two birthday cakes (chocolate and vanilla) plus make-your-own ice cream sundaes. It was all very wonderful and delicious. Tonight's dinner will certainly pale in comparison, but I think we need something light. My daughter's birthday gift is a cookbook, Quiches, Kugels, and Couscous: My Search for Jewish Cooking in France, by Joan Nathan. It's filled with stories and mouth-watering photos, and I can't wait to dive in. Thanks again for all your good wishes, Sue...See MoreMaking The Kids Happy
Comments (9)Penny, as a general answer, I'd be happy to prepare Christmas dinner. As a specific answer--it can't happen because my brother can't come to my home (the cats give him an asthma attack). Actually, my sister and her boyfriend are the ones who host Christmas--we've solved the 'who' problem by letting those who have the youngest children have Christmas at their home so the kids can enjoy their toys, and my other sister has Thanksgiving--I bring the desserts. Years ago, we took the burden of preparing all the food for a horde from my mother's shoulders. Here's the roadblock I think you're going to encounter if you suggest that the kids host--if one of the kids has Christmas dinner, how will they have time to leave to go see the other side of the family? Let's say I had everyone over for Christmas dinner, I'd have to toss them out so we could go to the in-laws (and I can't have both groups at once--long story). If I could make one suggestion--early next year, maybe Sept. or Oct, why not sit down with everyone and ask for suggestions as to how you all can have a family Christmas together--that besides being way too much work, you like seeing all of them together. Perhaps one of them may have a great brainstorm--and they might be really pleased at being involved in the problem-solving process. My in-laws have Thanksgiving the night before--mainly because my BIL is a waiter and works on the holiday, but it's a great idea because that frees the rest of us to visit the other sides of our families on 'the day'. Good luck and hope you've managed to rest up by now....See MoreFillet Mignon
Comments (24)If someone told me I could never eat beef again ... no big deal. Dh grills filets a few times a year and we eat burgers weekly during my tomato harvest. Maybe meatballs & meatloaf once a year. That’s about it. Grew up eating ribeyes and occasionally flank. I don’t care for any steak with fat or one that I have to chew and chew. That’s why I love a buttery filet. That said, tonight we dined at Sullivan’s steakhouse. It’s restaurant week (prix fixe menu) and that was dh’s choice; mine was Galatoire’s earlier in the week. I chose the filet (it is a steakhouse after all) with no sauce. I wanted a real comparison to the steaks dh grills. It didn’t even come close! Zero flavor and far from melt in the mouth tender. I can understand why some of you don’t like filets if you’ve eaten ones like that. And to think that they normally charge $32 for that cut is nothing short of criminal....See MoreHappy Birthday dukerdawg!

Didn't get to a movie, but had a great dinner out - Filet Mignon, grilled garlic shrimp and all the fixin's. I'm stuffed. Got the first season of Sopranos on DVD. (yes, I am waayyyy behind the times LOL) and a few other nice goodies. Thanks again for your kindness. Duane...See MoreLouiseab
