Thanks, everyone, for the good wishes! I've been enjoying the day, working on my family history scrapbook and ID'ing old photos. (Retirement means you still work all day, and you don't get paid for it, but *sometimes* you can do what you really enjoy, and that makes it all worthwhile!) Lars, the derivation is: MT = empty (i.e., empty nester). I chose that moniker when I first joined the forums because everybody seemed to have "Mom" names in those days, but my kids were all grown up and out on their own. Tricia, it's sunny here today but much colder than it has been--I was getting spoiled, thinking of 40's as "normal" for January. Today it's back to reality, highs in the mid-20's. I hope to get out for a walk while the sun is still shining. Nothing special is planned for tonight's dinner, except the turkey soup I made yesterday. Thanks again! Sue

Awwww, thank you so much, everyone! I'm now officially "over the hill" and sliding down the other side! ;-) I didn't do much celebrating today, as I spent the day in the ER with a sick friend who had become dehydrated and needed IV fluids and meds. Got home late, after picking up her prescriptions and groceries; I was too exhausted to accept DH's offer to take me out for dinner. But DD saved the day with a wonderful birthday phone call. Thanks again, one and all, for the good wishes! Ya know, a while back, I decided not to jump on all the feel-good bandwagons on this forum--NOT because I didn't feel the same happy or concerned thoughts as everyone else, but just because a) I had too much else to do, b) I'm usually tongue-tied when it comes to "saying the right thing," and c) I'm just not a bandwagon-jumper-onner. But, darn it, all the sweet wishes, pretty flowers, and sparkly balloons make me feel GOOD! :-) So I've resolved to turn over a new leaf and help others feel good as well. I'll probably keep it very simple--no graphics, just good wishes--but I'll try to join in from now on. To all of you I've missed in the past year, a belated Happy Birthday and best wishes for a great year! And Annie, my son dropped in for my birthday dinner; it was a last-minute surprise, so I hadn't baked a cake. But DS and DH had ice cream, and I enjoyed half of a cinnamon-raisin bagel. Thanks so much, everybody!

Annie, I DO have time to post today, because the partying was done last night, when DH and I attended the bar mitzvah celebration of a cousin's twin sons. To keep this food-related: after munching on appetizers, we dined on filet mignon, Chilean sea bass, asparagus, roasted potatoes, salad, and fruit-nut bread. For dessert, there were two birthday cakes (chocolate and vanilla) plus make-your-own ice cream sundaes. It was all very wonderful and delicious. Tonight's dinner will certainly pale in comparison, but I think we need something light.

My daughter's birthday gift is a cookbook, Quiches, Kugels, and Couscous: My Search for Jewish Cooking in France, by Joan Nathan. It's filled with stories and mouth-watering photos, and I can't wait to dive in.
