Kahrs engineered floor, staple/nailed down?

Hi,

I am considering Walnut engineered floor by Kahrs (Unity or American Natural Collections) for my second floor, but I'd like to avoid transitioning pieces (T moulding). I was told that for my floor plan the floating install isn't a good idea without transition pieces and I should do glue-down or staple-down installation.

I don't want to deal with glue - kind of messy and impossible to remove from subfloor.

So that leaves me with staple down. But I am getting contradicting information on this for Kahrs Woodloc, Woodloc 5S joint floors. Some of their manual listed staple down, but some of them say no.

Anyone here with experience installing Kahrs flooring use staple down?

What's your subfloor material? Is it OSB or is it fibre board or is it high-end plywood underlayment?

It's plywood, but I don't know enough about plywood to judge its quality. The house was built 30 years ago.

Buy a box, lay it down (clicked together in a big square)in an area where you will be installing it, and then walk on it and see if you are okay with the noise. What sounds "okay" to one person might be really annoying to someone else. This is the easiest way to put that question to rest. It's worth the $$ for one box to answer that question before you spend alot on a whole floor, because you don't want to find out after you have spent $XXXX's that the noise bugs you.

I learned my lesson and wish I went with the thicker engineered wood like I did in 2009 as it is more sturdy, feels better to walk on and is warmer. I had to redo my engineered wood floors due to damage from my water heater.

It is a good question. I assume you referred to the engineered wood floors in floating installation. In fact, stapling down an engineered wood floor can be a good option for your case too with a good underlayment like Floor Muffler. Floor Muffler will definitely help to control the noise to the rooms below. We usually recommend the nailing or stapling down installation over the floating if you have a plywood subfloor. If you prefer solid hardwood floor, it could work the same way.

A roof that's seven to nine feet above the ground, under a tree in a fairly narrow space between a house and a fence, will not be subjected to the same kind of wind force as a roof on a house. If there is a problem, it can be solved by some extra staples. That will be much easier than applying sheathing on the underside of a roof in a space that's too high to let me work lying down, and too low to let me stand up. OSB is referred to as 'plywood' as well. Proper underlayment plywood looks like a sheet of wood. OSB looks like potato chips glued into place - which is why some people refer to it as "chip board".

You want to nail/glue to the real plywood. OSB/chip board can cause problems with both staples and adhesives.
