Help! Need design help for coordinating colors in room!

I have a beautiful chair that I recently had recovered. The problem is when I got the fabric I thought it was a dark navy but it is a dark gray! I need to decide what to do with the colors in this room so it flow better. I need a new rug, I know the rug doesn’t work. Any help would be appreciated.

Options I’ve considered:

1) purchase a navy leather recliner to replace paisley chair,

2) keep chair and try and find rug that coordinates better in the room. If so, what type of rug would work well?

3) recover the chair again with a fabric with navy in it,

Any thoughts would be helpful as I’m losing sleep over this decision! LOL

I think a lighter rug would look good, one with some gray/cream and browns in it.

I have always been one to choose my paint first in a room even though it's backwards I know. The reason being that I love to change up my bedding and area rugs, particularly bedding. I like the idea of mostly ivory bedding but was wondering about possibly a quilt folded on the end and if so, whether to tie in the brown there or the blue of the wall color. Right now the room is painted dark brown which is the color my now 22 yr. old picked when it was his room. Definitely want to make it cheerier for a guest room.

The rug is great! Change sofa pillows with two in the same purple…but lumbars, one for each cushion. Not overwhelmed by the coffee table or the art. Too predictable, trying too hard.. I think the sofa color should dominate while considering the shape of sofa back. Window treatments…IMO, too delicate for such strong (good strong) decor.

I think white is a good choice, but not the only choice. Taking the sample door and going by eye is a good place to start for narrowing down your options, but you will still want to actually view paint samples in your kitchen to make a final decision. That's true even (maybe especially) with whites, since there are a zillion different whites and how they look can be affected dramatically by the lighting. As far as not wanting to look at blank white walls, I was going to suggest artwork, but it sounds like you are already thinking in that direction.

Thanks everyone for the insights! The cabinets will be pure white. Sayboone, I think that idea will work great in the kitchen! I was nervous about the mixing of metal colors, but I agree that the contrast of the oil bronze will make the room have a little something extra. I like the cooler choices of the first few granite stone, but was concerned it would be to light for the kitchen. I'm glad to know that I was not too far off with choices that actually would have worked! I chose knobs, because I knew it would be much easier to replace with just one screw and not have to worry about spacing for longer or shorter pulls. I have also seen knobs that are almost like pulls. I'm hoping everything comes together nicely, hopefully closing on Aug 25. I'll be sure to update the thread with pictures once completed. Next big decision is what paint choices to make......

I agree with Kulrn, you need a lighter rug with some gray in it to bring it all together. No need for changing out the chair.

If and when you do purchase a new rug, please go for a much larger size, so that all your furniture is sitting on it. That instantly makes your room look larger and more comfortable. A large floral pattern actually looks great with your furniture. The size of your chairs is perfect with your couch, and I'm afraid a recliner might be too large and bulky. The best option might be to recover the chair in navy and find a larger rug. I hope you'll consider a large floral pattern and darker colors again because that works well with your floor and showcases your beautiful couch and the yellow pillows.

I agree with buying a larger rug in creams and gray--no brown. The creams and gray will go so much better with everything you already have.
