Great room makeover help
Hi! We just bought this house and I am a little unsure as to how to set up the great room. These are pictures from the real estate listing (none of this furniture or decor is ours). I'd love your take on:
1. Paint: Looking for a nice bright neutral that has a little contrast with white trim. I am thinking something in the light grey family or maybe a creamy white? I don't want to look at the room and think "grey walls" if that makes sense? Something that just reads really neutral that other colors will look good with.
2. Furniture/TV layout: In this picture the TV will go in the alcove above the brown built in. That area is already wired for a TV. It is awkward though because of being right next to the fireplace. It's hard to tell scale from the picture but the fireplace is nearly five feet tall and the sectional in the room currently is gigantic.
3. More contemporary vibe: The house feels pretty formal and traditional to me right now. We are a young family with an infant/preschooler so I want the vibe to be relaxed and fun. And...durable ;)

Comments (5)I definitely don't like the bottom option. I would like the top fabric if it were reversed. Meaning the navy were the geometric pattern and the ivory was the background. I would also try to incorporate a floral, a polka dot, an animal print or something whimsical. Comments (11)I think blush pink walls would look great with the neutrals you have in there. Consider adding some art on the walls and maybe a nice colorful rug too. I'm not a plant expert, but I imagine some low light loving plants could survive without a window (at least for some time) and would bring in some color and life to the room. Comments (13)Hi y'all! Light blocking drapes are a great idea! Adding that to my buy list! And I'm already searching for tape to mark off some areas. Thanks for the tip! I like the image shared, but since we are planning to use this for tv/lounge, I think that set up wouldn't give us much space. We have a 6 year old, so planning to have a little wii game console hooked up to the tv for him. I would like to have the room "neat and tidy" as it is right off our entry way, but also would like it to be comfortable. Planning to stock up on baskets for the cabinet to keep everything hidden. I also have 2 mini schnauzers that will probably claim this room like they claim everything in our house. 😂 I can't seem to make any decisions because I'm afraid what I buy will make the space feel dark and small. I'm leaning toward light slipcover couch ( or one with a chaise) to keep it bright, but not sure if that's a wise option with my little guy and pups ...so maybe a light leather option? I'll try to find a picture of our main living room, to show the style I'm trying to match. This is our living space. Would like to carry this style into the front, but not sure if I should have light rug with leather or darker rug (like seagrass or jute) with lighter furniture....See More

5 years agoNo true gray, it won't work with your warm floors. Well, let me back up a bit.
You can make gray and warm floors work but it needs to be intentional and well thought out. If you are a novice decorator it is much easier to work with the tones in the room rather than trying to blend warm and cool.
Accessible beige SW is a nice crisp neutral that works well with warm tones but has the clean modern look of a cooler color.

5 years agoAesthetic white is the next lightest color on the accessible beige color card. I've never seen it in person but it looks very light in photos with natural light. It's definitely worth a sample.
