Excessive number of vents in 100 year old house

My house has a huge cold air return in the living room floor and floor vents throughout the first floor. These floor vents are where the heat and A/C come in. On the second floor, we have ceiling vents where the heat and A/C come in. In addition to these, we have two vents stacked up on a wall in the living room, and in each room on the second floor. About 10 years ago, the previous owners remodeled the second floor and turned it from an attic into three bedrooms and a bathroom. The wall vents in all these rooms don't seem to be doing anything and I can't figure out why we have them. In the living room, the vents are in a space that we suspect is hiding part of the chimney brick and we would love to expose it if possible.
