Our home is rough white brick and off-white genuine stucco, medium texture. The materials alternate on large portions of the house. (Garage is all brick; one projection is all brick; stucco on another large section.) Roof is slate grey. White window frames and trim. Bluestone chip driveway. Grey Brussels block terraces.

Well...when it comes to whites, there are a gazillion "white" hues. Some are warm, some are cool. Some have a color bias, while others have a neutral bias. Some look fine in sun, but not in shade. Some look good in shade, but not in sun.

People are going to respond to your posting saying, "I used XX", and "I used YY" and "I used ZZ". None of these comments may be particularly helpful since they may simply be personal opinion, without any reasoning or explanation.

What to do?

Get lots of color chips and look at them at your construction site, vertically, in both sun and shade. Pick your favorite 6 or so. Buy the small sample bottles and brush them on scrap plywood or OSB, in large amounts, place them vertically in sun and shade. Eliminate what you don't like. Zero in on what you do like.

Presto! You've found your white.

Do you really like white houses or were you influenced by all the photos you just saw of the latest white modern farmhouse trend?

Pretty much every new house in my town of LA is a white modern farmhouse ... all teardowns/rebuilds on small lots because we have no farms or even undeveloped land!

I have to fess up. I don't know the proper term for our 'rough white brick'. It's actually red brick, but has a rough coating of 'something' -('stucco')? It's not 'white brick'. It's not painted. You can see trace of red here and there from a very close distance. It's not even very 'white' -- confused yet? Anyway, it's been zero maintenance for us here in northern Illinois for 17 years. I knew I wanted it the minute I saw it in the materials yard. I like *texture*.

White exteriors are so trendy.

I like white houses. It really is not a trend. Yes, the whole Joanna Gaines look is a trend. But thats not all white houses. #notallwhitehouses ???

They do show dirt more than, say, dust colored houses.

Actually I'm beginning to think all white houses unless they were built 50+ years ago are trendy, whether they are Joanna Gaines wannabes, or what my builder's Dad calls white sugar cube houses.

Trendy? How about "classic"! I'm on my way home from a 4 wk vacation in a New England town where just about every single house is white! They look wonderful, are not dirty, and are about as far from being "trendy" as it is possible to be.

My husband and I are currently building our home and I'm
reconsidering our exterior colors. Right now we have very cool options
picked out but I feel like I don't love it anymore. I've been looking up
new colors online today and I found that I'm enjoying the look of a
white exterior.

My questions are, what are the pros and cons I should be aware of?
Also what color stone or brick would you use for an all white exterior?

Go through Pinterest, collect 20-25 white houses that appeal to you, then go through and analyze what they have in common. Are you attracted to white houses with green roofs? Or white houses with porches? Does a particular color front door keep popping up? Do the houses you choose have a shingle accent in the gable? What about shutters?

Pros and cons? Not particularly. It's a style choice, not a functional option.

Trendy? How about "classic"

Gotta agree. I'm from a rural area, and 100% of the old-old farmhouses are white ... or, I should say, they were all white when I was growing up. Those that've been remodeled are often yellow or grey now. I grew up in a white farmhouse.

I can't comment on my current neighborhood 'cause we're 100% brick.
