Dragonflies and BT (mosquito dunks)
Comments (2)twice I found dragonfly nymphs clamped on to small goldfish; haven't felt the same way about dragonflies ever since. (the fish died) On the other hand, now that I have so many goldfish, maybe I need MORE dragonflies......See Morefive gallon bucket+mosquito dunks+pond water+twigs: dragonflies?
Comments (14)it's been over a year now....towards the end of last summer the pond had two resident frogs, and then one much bigger resident frog. by late last fall my 55 gallon drum pond had an established residece of water fleas and other barely visible critters late in may my son and I found a quivering puddle of dying wood frog tadpoles in a just dried up vernal pool. we scooped them up and dumped them in the pond there appear to be larval insects down there now, at least ones big enough to kill and gut a tadpole, and now there is a graduating class of a few wood frogs each day (they come up and then split asap, perhaps because a big healthy water snake has also taken up lodging right next to the pond) all in all, it has come a long way in a year, and the bog garden i built last summer a few feet away is now an impenetrable mat of ferns and other plants will post photos...See MoreDo Mosquito dunks kill Dragonfly nymphs?
Comments (11)We have a lot of dead Dragonfly nymphs, but there are 3 distinct species in the bog and they may be preying on each other? The way the bacillus works is by destroying thr gut lining of many nymph species of insects (not just mosquitos and black flies), and the study linked mentions smaller Dragonfly nymph size. I wish they did a much larger study because just one genus/species test leaves me a bit nervous still. lsst - what kind (or colored) Dragonflies do you have?...See MoreMosquito Dunks for fungus gnats--how much?
Comments (6)momma, float the dunk in a container of water overnight, then use that water to water your container plants as you normally would. At least three consecutive times on your usual watering schedule, expect it to take three or four weeks to kill any hatching larvae and stop the breeding cycle. I brought the gnats home in a new indoor plant once (I saw them around the plant in the store and didn't realize their significance) - ended up with them in every container plant, some that were decades old. I don't over water. My feeling is that keeping soil on the dry side might prevent them from establishing, it wasn't helpful in eliminating an infestation. Years later, as I'm growing more from seed and need uniform moisture, I prefer the liquid form of BTi for convenience, but the dunks method does work....See Moreirma_stpete_10a
