New House, Need Lighting Advice, Point Me In The Right Direction
Comments (2)you can mix finishes successfully, and almost all the styles would work. you don't have to match the exact style of your lighting either. with lighting, you can mix and match to your heart's content. beautiful house by the way. now, how do you choose, from all this ocean of possibilities? what I did-I researched a lot, a lot, a lot of lighting, everywhere but including vintage/second hand/custom made sites...everything that caught my eye and inspired me, I saved onto one big Pinterest board. Then I narrowed them in terms of dimensions etc, and only the ones I looked at again and again..now I had a new board ..much smaller yet I still had couple hundreds of possible lights there..:) then it was still an inspiration stage yet but gave me more confidence to know what I really love even if I can't afford same exact thing-in the end, I went the route of vintage since I couldn't afford whatever I really wanted otherwise (I really wanted many things-only my dream dining fixture would be 3.5 K ..and I had to outfit the whole place since it was gut remodel and every fixture should be installed by the final inspection) I figured out that I love both modern and traditional..:) simple, and elaborate..that I love colors.. I also figured out it's very hard for me to resist things with flowers on them..:) I figured out a lot of things. then I went by a specific room..what do I need there? what do I love for there? can the lights I love, that are different, still relate to each other in that space? Do they share something in common? if yes, what? (many times the answer to that question was "me". they shared me being drawn to them.. usually it gives some reassurance about different lights working together. us being the common denominator) that was a long, long process-figuring out all the lights, in the space that didn't quite exist yet should be a bit easier in your case-you have your house..and you don't need to install your lighting at once, You need just a several fixtures..I know easier said than done but you have a lot of clues around you already. I'd start with the dining. Look at the lights, lot of lights Take into account dining light shoud actually be flattering..casting interesting shadows probably not the best idea when it comes to dining. Crystals would look gorgeous with thart brick background. Prrecisely because they're crystals. They're polished and sparkly, brick is matte and rough. They'll be great partners..like in romantic novels, you know:) but many other fixtures would work too. don't narrow your choices just yet..look at a lot, get inspired, than narrow them down. and go from there congratulations on your new house!...See MoreDecor on a Shoestring: Thread #3-share your recent finds
Comments (270)It's a plan...first research the strongest glue (link above but it doesn't cover all glues...) and, as I said, I wouldn't use expanding. Then youtube tourniquet clamp. Basically ropes would go around the parts you want to squeeze together--in your chairs is would be the very top rail down to the bit above where you sit...anyway lasso rope around that tie a knot and then tie a what-have-you (I usually use a hammer) to the knot with another knot. Then you're going to twist the hammer round and round...you'll see the cracked/broken area tighten so make sure your rope is strong...Also, put the knot/hammer near the seat because after gluing you don't want to have to stand there and hold the hammer. So you'll need something heavy to rest on the hammer to keep it from twisting undone... Let it sit until dry and then some. Don't forget to let it cure, too for a week or so (personally I would keep the clamp on it for a week). Let us know how it goes!...See MoreTrying to make brand new kitchen my style. Help!
Comments (39)Yes, use your budget towards beautiful furnishings and art work that are in your style. Work with your "givens" -- the light flooring, the existing kitchen. If you thought you had a budget that allowed for some expensive kitchen changes, use some of that budget to hire a one-time interior decorator or designer to help you choose pieces, window treatment, and other purchases that will work with the lighting, floors, and spaces you have. Avoid doing or choosing things piecemeal--I love that rug!--so that everything harmonizes and gives your home a feeling of flow and style. Good luck!...See MoreNeed new roof, please help with decision making process!
Comments (2)Nice house. So I'd first look at what the warrantees are and how long the company has been in business. We bought steel shingles for our roof with a 'lifetime warrantee' but then the company was dissolved into another who wouldnt add skylights without voiding the warrantee. Depending where you live , ie florida, louisiana, texas, if you have hurricanes.. /lots of rain.. I wouldnt ignore new flashing. and hurricane straps as necessary. maybe go straight to the manufacturer of the current skylights and see if they have local contractors that might salvage your present windows. or Pella or Anderson, for new windows .. from there you might have a pick of the litter for actual shingles from different sources and get exactly what you want. If you have to choose a contractor without window company help. my question is do you like the skylights where they are or have you found they might be better up or down /left/right? Might as well get that ironed out too. Another serious matter is whether you plan to add extensions to the house. Extensions need an equal slope on the roof as anywhere else. No cutting corners with that rubber roof sealer.. I just say this from experience. our new ceiling of extension is in worse shape than the 50yo house its attached to. The rain comes in under the gutter of the original house. Have the final plan in mind; before you get a roofing company that kaboshes all your imaginations with warrantee limitations on shingles. It might be a question of getting most of the house shingled one way and rinky dink shortlife shingles for the part that will be cut away later. Whatever product is easiest to maneuver around for changes to the structure....See Moretqtqtbw
