Bring on the fireworks, bring on the blooms!

A Little Fire, Scarecrow really reminded me of fireworks this morning.

Melee was blooming up a storm again.

Ruby Lipstick is having a bad season. Scapes are short, buds a few, and this is the first bloom that hasn't been splotchy and it's the next to the last one. This is the one the was involved in the cave-in. My other clump was just as bad and even shorter in the backyard raised bed. Hopefully it will return to its former grandeur next year.

Sunshine Bouquet ffo - I received this as bonus with some Lily Auction buys. The hybridizer, Carol Anderson, registered it as having 52 buds per scape. I think its color and edge are quite unique, and I'd like to cross it with some UFs.

Dick - Scarecrow only has 10 to 11 buds per scape here. Jim Murphy told me he usually gets more than 10 on it and some southern growers have reported bud counts from 18 to the 20s from it. Scarecrow multiplies very rapidly, and I'm still growing it in a large pot. I hope to finally get it in the ground this fall. I expect it will have more buds in that situation.

Sherry - Waves Become Wings is a beautiful, dependable Hanson late. I imagine it would grow even better in the north. The blooms have heavy substance and nice pink color that doesn't fade like others with temps in the high 90s. I'm planting Sunshine Bouquet this fall just to find out if it has those high bud counts. I will say on its first day to bloom it was a bad fader in this heat. It was hybridized in PA, so it probably didn't face the kind of July temps were have here on a regular basis.

Debra, the photo of Scarecrow is beautiful. So festive. Coral Majority is a hard one for me to photograph because of the bright color. Rip Saw is named aptly for the look of it does look like a saw with those teeth. LOL.

liz h, There is no benefit in chilling your amaryllis bulbs. In fact, chilling (freezing them down) will kill them. Never let your refridgerator go below 10-13C or upper forties, lower fifties in F. I keep my fridge on 47F constantly. Don't put your bulbs in the fridge with leaves on. Cut them off, hint them with fungicide, let them dry the cut up for a few days, then you can place them in the fridge, carefully, so the bulbs would not touch the walls or the bottom directly. They are ready to be planted in 6-8 weeks. I would not call this process chilling, since they do chill tulips and hyacints for instance, which process literally mean that they freeze down the potted up bulbs, after they had a little time to establish themselves in the planting medium, so when they are taken out and defrosted, they start growing and flowering any time of the year. Tulips require freezing down to be forced. Amaryllis can benefit from the aforementioned cooling down in order to achieve forcing of flowers at times biologically out of order. If you have a dry, mold free place during winter that stays pretty steadily around 10C/50F without the danger of frost, you don't need fridge to achieve the same result. Good luck. Protect your bulbs from freeze, and never cool a wet bulb!

It is likely a tropical hibiscus, Hibiscus rosa sinensis. I have had similar experiences with bringing them in and having them flower into January. I believe the flowering stops then due to the lower light levels indoors. I put mine in my best sunny window. I even tried buying a heavy duty plant light. Nothing made much of a difference. I think that time of year you just have to focus on keeping the foliage healthy and pest-free and wait until summer for blooms. Any time you prune a branch it takes up to three months for that branch to bloom again. If you prune it back when you move it indoors, you will be depriving yourself of flowers that you could have until January. Of course, if it's too big to bring indoors, you may just have to prune somewhat. One good trick is to prune 1/3 of the branches at a time, either scattered throughout the plant or on one side of the plant. A few weeks later, prune 1/3 more, then in a few weeks do the last 1/3. This keeps the plant always making blooms and keeps the size manageable and the shape nice. You'll get occasional yellow leaves, not a big deal unless you have lots of them. It generally means something has changed from the status quo, less or more light or water, higher or lower temperatures, etc.

I love all your photos! I had Blue Girl in the desert, in the ground(Phoenix and Lake Havasu) did well both of those places. I have had her here going on 6 yrs in a pot (hot & very humid). She is really a champ here too. Always blooming and healthy foliage.

LOL, Kate, I think for some rea Son I was expecting dianthus so that iswhat i saw in the red rose. I had lots of red at one time in different shades, always enjoyed it. I had some like the called Sooty that looked very like the deep red in your 2nd pic, one of my favs Memory of Morning here is in a pretty good location, but has not been multiplied much. It almost died the 1st year I had it, no bloom that year, and all that survived was an offshoot, the size of a proliferation. It came back the next spring, but no bloom that year. Last year it bloomed for the 1st time, and put out another fan. This year I have 2 fans, 2 scapes, and looks like 1 fan may divide into a 3rd, hopefully.

I really like A Little Fire, Scarecrow and Rip Saw. Strolling in the Roses is a wonderful, rich color. I love the watermark too.

A Little Fire Scarecrow really does look seasonally appropriate, really a good pic of it. I always like clump shots and these look good as usual. Strolling in the Roses is so pretty, coral Majority has really been making a show this year for me too. I keep looking at Ripsaw, the name is appropriate for that one too. When I first looked at it, not sure that I liked it. The more I look though, the more I like it. I should probably not look again.

I like Rip Saw and A Littie Fire, Scarecrow. It is registered at 10 buds which puts me off a little. It looks like it might do better for you. ???

Lovely group! Great color on Coral Majority, very pretty. Rip Saw is interesting, I like the look of it. Strolling in the Roses also catches my eye.

What a gorgeous post! Melee was beautiful, Really like Sweet Child of mine. Coral Majority is always a delight with that color. Ripsaw is really pretty, and there isn't a stinker in the bunch, but Scarecrow just reaches out and grabs you. Beautiful and pertinent with the fourth coming to look like fireworks.
