When to bring in for holiday bloom

The info I've read says that I should bring my potted amaryllis in "before the last frost", let them go dry, let the foliage die back, and keep them in a cool, dark place until Thanksgiving or so. With an average last frost date of mid November, I suspect I should bring these in earlier. How long of a dormant period do they need?

I don't really have a cool place in my house, other than a drinks refrigerator. Would this be better than room temp of around 73 to 75?
