OT....I have a question regarding Iceland
Comments (8)There is a list, yes, but the names committee will generally accept new names as long as they have no foreign letters (such as C, Q, Z, W), are not likely to cause public outrage or embarrassment to the person given the name (for example, SatanÃÂa and Lúsifer were rejected), are given to a person of the "wrong" gender or do not fit into the grammar system (you have to be able to decline them according to Icelandic grammar rules). Blær (this is the proper Icelandic spelling of the name of the girl in the article) was rejected because of the last two rules - the committee considered it to be masculine and did not accept the feminine declension her mother invented for it (even though it follows proper grammar rules). The male version goes Blær-Blæ-Blæ-Blæs, and the feminine Blær-Blæ-Blæ-Blævar. The court decision to allow Blær to keep her name means that we now have our very first unisex name....See MoreSome Iceland pics!
Comments (54)Thanks for sharing your experiences SueB. I'm glad it's still nice and empty, that's great to hear. Agreed about the driving, it is white knuckle at times, but that's all part of the charm I guess. There is an (unintentionally) hilarious cartoon video about driving hazards on the airplane. Our rental car still had snow tires on it (in May) and we were super thankful for that. We ended up doing a few 'unconventional' moves on some of the tiny farm roads. The Swiss Alps are a close second to Iceland for a vacation spot, I agree! And of your next round of choices, I vote Vancouver. Went there last fall and was totally impressed....See MoreLiving room is open to dining room and entry way
Comments (29)Beautiful rooms and paint color, minuscule. I will have a look at BM Silver Mist. I like the Accessible Beige but Dear Husband does not. He says it looks dirty. It exactly matches some of the tones in the flooring and is nearly identical to the fireplace surround, and extremely close to the couch color, which would make the couches sort of disappear and an accent wall color for the fireplace wall necessary. SW Accessible Beige on top, SW Creamy on the bottom. SW Creamy is really yellow. Too yellow. Such a tall wall. Was thinking about adding some trim like this (not in Georgian style because mine is not a Georgian style house) to break up the blankness a bit. I will look at BM Silver Mist and for something slightly lighter than Healing Aloe. Dear Husband liked the look of BM Constellation...See MoreRestoring overgrazed clay-free volcanic soil
Comments (36)Ed: just realized that I misunderstood floral_uk's post from a few days ago: "I'm interested to see the Icelandic name for gorse. Similar to Whin which is a vernacular name in the British Isles." I took that as "I would be interested to see..." rather than "I find it interesting that...". You're spot on - while "hv" is pronounced "kv", it's analogous to the English "wh" - for example "hval" (whale), "hvað" (what), "hvar" (where), "hveiti" (wheat), "hvítt" (white), "hvolpur" (whelp), etc. So "hvinviður" would be anologous to "whin-wood". I don't know if the Icelandic is taken straight from the English "whin" or whether it has an Icelandic etymology (such as "hvinur" (whisling sound), "hvinn" (uncommon word for thief), etc; I'd guess the former....See MoreIdaClaire
