Comments (10)Are you talking about one of these kinds of silverware drawer? I open the silverware drawer a zillion times a day, not just when it's time to set the table - a knife to butter the toast, a fork to scramble the eggs, a spoon for DGD's fruit cup snack. I'd rather just open the intended drawer than first the pot drawer and then the silverware drawer. The 6" between the refrigerator and the doorway may be dictated by the size of the cabinets/stove you have along that wall. If you had a choice, moving the fridge over a few inches would be good. As for flush, that's probably too close. When we installed our similar (minus the fridge) wall, we mis-measured a bit and ended up flush. No clue how that happened as we're positively obsessive about measuring, but fortunately it wasn't worse. You can see how that looks. With a full depth refrigerator (~33" vs 24" cabs) in that spot, the doorway might begin to look like a tunnel. OTOH, it's a mudroom back there, so maybe not an issue. Given a choice, I'd expand 3", but not 6"....See MoreFurnishing 1br Loft Space (MCM Direction)
Comments (9)Although I originally wanted the Tv on the brick wall so I could see the tv while cooking but the more time I spend at my new place I feel the natural walk way along the brick wall points towards having it on the beige wall. I completely agree. Interesting points about using the brick wall as an art gallery --- Really like that direction. Nancy, your rendition looks incredible. I like how it captures the living room layout I'm looking for, while managing to include a small table space by the window! Look forward to revisiting and diving into this over the weekend. Thank you both for your ideas!...See Moreheating MCM tiny home - advice needed!
Comments (89)@creekgirl, you wrote 'tuckpointing'? Do you mean pointing the brickwork on the chimney? Well, shortform on fireplace - in old-style fireplace venting through standard chimney, as someone wrote above, very inefficient as draws in cold air, plus pollution in the house, there are safety issues, etc. And if the damper is not working well, you might be losing warm air all the time, even when not in use. You'd get the pointing done if the existing chimney was in bad shape, but not clear if that's the issue or would be enough (chimney rebuild?). If you're renting it out, do you want to deal with all those issues? You could put a fireplace insert in the fireplace spot - basically a wood stove - which often now requires direct air from outdoors - and they'd most likely run a metal chimney through the existing. Better in most respects but still, it has to be operated correctly with good quality wood; do you want this in a rental unit? Or a gas fireplace (closed, venting through the chimney) is possible, but would it be worth it to have another gas appliance for what might only be occasional use? Keep in mind that depends on other heat. For a relatively small place, a good fireplace might be nice to have, but may kick out a lot of heat. This is before even considering the code issues. By all means get it looked at, but it might not be worth it, and easier to close up the chimney entirely. I know a lot of people with fireplaces and fireplace inserts who use them rarely (like once or twice a year) or not at all. (Note you may need the chimney to be looked at even if you're not planning on using - just to check for water damage/structural stability - but it's a different level of work if not planning on using it)....See MoreFamily room Design/Decor Advice that Shares space with a Kitchen
