Design Around This... MCM home built around boulder
Comments (24)My house is built around a boulder. No lie! And, I lived here about thirty years before I knew it. The back third of my basement is a dirt crawl space. It is about chest level and kind of creepy back there. In the forty years I have lived here, I have never climbed up there. The dirt is uneven and particularly high in one spot. I got curious (finally) about that spot and poked it with something, which is when I discovered that it is solid rock. Later I talked to a long time resident of the community who remembers when the houses on my street were built. He remembered that one was built around a boulder. Guess whose house that is? LOL It causes no problems....See MoreArchitect-vernacular MCM-brutalist house with traditional kitchen
Comments (18)Actually the current owner, according to the public tax records has been there for seven years. Its harder than it sounds for many people to conceive putting in a kitchen in something other than the current mode, so I don't want to be too hard on the current owner. At least its natural wood and not neo-Edwardian. I think its the hutch that really grates and thats not such a big piece of the picture, I guess. The original kitchen in this house was probably stick built, not incredibly functional and maybe kinda ugly--I've seen some of the originals and I dunno...There was an iconic Louis Kahn glass and wood box up for auction last year or so, in order to try and save it from being torn down and replace with something neo-palatial, and one of the problems really was the kitchen: Tiny; shallow cabinets; some with sliding thin ply doors, that old 60s track light and 60s appliances. And you almost would have had to do an addition of another glass box in order to get what is currently considered a functional kitchen in the house....See MoreFurnishing cottage on a budget and in a hurry
Comments (108)Some more progress in the past few weeks - it's been a frenzy of furniture assembly with some painting on the side. And working full time. And guests. Anyway, the seapearl paint colour has worked out VERY well and I get lots of compliments on it. A very warm off-grey, reminds me of a plaster color. The pillows on the chairs are placeholders destined for my daybed. I originally had planned a grey sofa cover in here but the navy called my name. It's a bit dark but not bad for $99. This bathroom is killing me - two coats on the wainscoting and at least one to go. One on the walls, one to go, And now I realize I have to do the trim as it is so discoloured (aged oil). It is so much brighter in there, it's unbelievable. Needs new blinds obvs. I wanted a "sandy" coastal feeling in here and ended up with BM Ballet White. I did finally learn how to cut in after 20 years. Looking forward to my new tape-free lifestyle. I told my husband I deserve a cookie or possibly a gold star for cutting in this corner over the shower. Let's just say my ladder position wouldn't have won any OSHA awards. I also realized, I don't think the bluer left wall was an optical illusion - I think it's a different color than the other walls by accident or design. The grey right wall is the same color as the ceiling. This is my life now. I forget what it's like to sit on something I didn't assemble first....See MoreBesides for tear down, general direction for this 70's house
Comments (84)That's quite a hike from the sink to the cook top. Also it appears with the current layout that the cooktop is outside the kitchen. I would think through as you are cooking in your current home what steps you go through and how that would work in this design. Most prep work is done near the sink and then taken to the stove. How far are you willing to carry that? Also you often start with taking things out of the fridge and pantry and take it to the sink for prepping. How far are you willing to walk back and forth to get everything you need? If step count and getting exercise is your goal then this might work for you, but I think for everyday use you will find it inefficient. It looks good though....See Moregroveraxle
