Need help choosing ventilator for custom range hood

We are redoing our kitchen, and I am getting a decorative wood hood. The problem is I have no clue what to get for a ventilator that will fit in it. Any guidance on what to get? Specs on the hood in the picture below, we got the 36 DBnDB, highlighted in yellow.

There's no hood depth, and certainly no internal (cavity) measurements. I will only guess that extractor insert width is ~34" for a 36" nominal width unit

Your cabinet installer needs to be consulted if you expect him to install it into something that wasn’t custom designed to receive it. This is where using the cabinet company’s hand in glove designed for each other models saves you time and expense. By the time you pay an installer to kludge the two together, you could have bought the more expensive models from the cabinet company.

And the whole installation needs to be 30” from the cooking surface, minimum.

I currently have a smooth top glass range. Every time I saute with olive oil (a frequent occurrence), after I'm done, no matter how careful I have been, whether the food being sauteed is at room temp. and/or dried as much as possible, in a perfectly good, appropriately-sized all-clad pan or any other I've tried, I have splatter on my cooktop and the control panel (in the rear of the cooking surface). If you are able to avoid this, I'd love to know how. This is one of the many things that pushed me to induction, which can be protected during cooking, or, at the least, stays cool so that it can be cleaned immediately and will never cook on. And I don't care for spatter guards, as I find it seems to have a steaming effect on my food, and I have to lift it in any case to stir, at which time the afore-mentioned spattering occurs anyway. It was Trevor Lawson, at Euro Stoves, who talked to us a long time about ventilation needs when we were considering the Blue Star, so hopefully he can help you. I hope you will keep us posted on your solutions, and, certainly post pics when it's done, since it's such an unusual configuration.

Broan E64E30SS with Broan's 600 CFM or higher remote or in-line blower will do the trick. These utilize 10 inch round ductwork. Remote blowers install on the outside of your house, either on the roof or an exterior wall. The In-line blower would be intalled in an attic if you have the room. These tend to be slightly quieter than the remote blowers. The higher the CFM output a blower has, the quieter its operation on low setting, the most common setting. also look at Vent-A-Hood 30 inch 600 CFM units. These are a bit quieter for normal and high settings than the Broan but work best when the output from the hood is vertical, not horizontal. Also, if these appeal to you, have a saleperson show you how to dismantle to clean. It's not hard but it's also not for everyone

It looks like the Imperial 42" is the favorite. It is funny that most of my "inspiration" pictures have a similarly shaped hood, since I saved those images in my "backsplash" folder to try to help my choose the BS height (i.e., I didn't intentionally choose those pictures for the hood). The voting for BS height is mixed, with the majority so far choosing the 8' height. The image above with the tall gray glass BS is from the Smallbones catalog -- I love that look -- makes me wish I could have gone "topless." I think I prefer the taller glass BS, but I'm not sure how to overcome the technical difficulties with the chinmey extending beyond the glass. The glass and wall above will be painted the same color so the line will not be a strong contrast like most of the images above, although the shine factor will obviously be very different.

How tall are your ceilings? A mantle hood needs to have some height and width to be proportionate as a "mantle", and often that's incompatible with a smaller scaled room. One idea is to not take it to the ceiling. Use the area at the top to install a grate to expel the air. Or, run a duct inside the wall to an adjacent room, or through the ceiling joists to a grate in the room. Or run a duct through the top shelf of the cabinets to an end cabinet with a grate. A lot depends on the actual layout and construction details of the room.

Who is installing the hood?

I am currently going through coordinating my hood with my HVAC people who are doing the necessary duct work and the cabinet maker who will make the hood cabinet to fit whatever insert I get. At least to me the measurements seem more of less the same for my 30" inset which are all about 28" give or take a 1/2".

My current issue is that I didn't realize I needed a rear vent versus a top vent since the soffit above that wall is a structural concrete beam so they have to install the duct work to the vent behind the sheet rock.

Stanisci offers blowers sized to fit if you are getting a standard size. Safest way if not working with a designer, just check with installer about ducting.

Thank you for your input! I hadn't even thought about the ventilator portion until after I designed the kitchen. I was naive in thinking that I'd be able to find a cookie cutter ventilator to put in my decorative wood hood! Now I'll just have to suck it up and pay the extra money so that I know what I'm getting fits in perfectly. Now the question is... 600 cfms or 1,200?? We don't really fry anything, and it's going over a 30" range, but it's an open concept space- about 13x30. It's funny how the things you don't even consider when planning a kitchen end up being the hardest to figure out in the end!

Either blower size will require the addition of a Make Up Air system to the home. What would be your plan for that?

Contact the company making the hood for the insert measurements.

For CFM, I think that you should get your HVAC company to assist you with analysis, materials, and cost. If you live in a cold climate, heated make up air will need to be considered.
