Aralia 'Sun King'
Comments (2)Do a search on the perennials forum. Rouge21 has this plant and has had no issues with seeding. I know other Aralias (where I work in zone 5b/6a on the NH seacoast) are a problem with seeding, but 'Sun King' isn't supposed to have that problem....See Morerouge21 - how's that Aralia Sun King looking?
Comments (64)I've got some ASK for a very shaded area. From what I read online I thought that in the shade in my short growing season it would probably top out at 4' tall and wide, but NHBabs pointed me to this thread because of Thyme2dig's enormous specimen. I skimmed, so maybe I missed it, but how much sun does T2D's get? Larger than 4' would be great for my location, but it will determine if I put one or two there. If 7' wide is the norm in deep shade then I should only plant one. Also, I am at minimum 2 weeks behind everybody else, and possibly more. On the coast or Maine our summers come late. I know it's a fast grower, but our season is shorter....See MoreWhy isn't my chrysanthemum (ajania) pacificum growing?
Comments (7)"Because I thought only plants that like hot dry sites are suited rock gardens" Not at all. A wide variety of plants can be grown in a rock garden, including alpines and shade plants. The commonality with any of these is a coarse, freely draining soil, which does not appear to be what your ajania is currently enjoying :-) If the plant grows naturally on rocky cliffs in its native environment, then a rock garden setting makes perfect sense. Often the best success is in duplicating as closely as you can the conditions in which the plant grows naturally....See MoreShow us your A.S.K (Aralia Sun King)
Comments (23)A NH gardener who isn't on the forum much has one about that size. I don't know how long it takes to get there, but I'm wondering how much moisture plays a part. As an example, hosts are drought tolerant, but they come from a high moisture environment. They reach their full potential with adequate water. Wondering if Aralia is the same. At least I know with our short growing season that this size is possible! Wish I knew more about how to get it this size, other than time....See Morelaceyvail 6A, WV
