thanks, glad you like it :) I didn't want to go full wood stained door because I thought it would be dark. I didn't want to go full glass door, for a couple reasons, one we have dogs, and we would have a lot of doggie nose smears lol. The room is no more than 5 feet wide by 8 feet long, so having the half glass brings some light and also now that our laundry room is fixed up so much nicer than it was before, why hide it completely behind a full door :)

We still have to install the crown moulding and figure out what backsplash, but I have at least a year to pick the backsplash, no real hurry since I had the counters with 4" backsplash around the sink

Nice, I like the hardware on it! We have a small area where our garage door, laundry room door, and basement door are in the same space. The laundry room door wasn't a problem, but the basement door was a huge problem and we ended up making a sliding barn door out of it. Like yours, ours looks nothing like an actual barn door, but it sure does solve a problem! (We couldn't make it a pocket door because it is a firewall and there is electrical, it wasn't going to work, sliding doors/barn doors aren't always a trend, sometimes they really do solve a problem area.) We used the existing solid core door, added some width to it with another old door that we ripped, we glued some thin walnut plywood to the front and back, added some solid walnut to the sides to finish it off, and I sealed it with about four coats of Waterlox.

In my photo above, the laundry room door is directly behind me when I'm taking this photo... I'm basically leaning up against it to get this photo, and the garage door is directly to my right. Off to the left the area opens up into our kitchen.

really nice door skmom, I like the walnut bookmatched pattern. I liked how the Waterlox turned out. I'm going to use Waterlox for my black walnut island counter too once we order it.

How did you use the Waterlox? When I did it, I left my door laid across my old counter on my island. I then sanded one side, stained it, then 24 hours later started with the Waterlox. I finished one side with 4 coats, one a day, then my husband and I flipped it and I did the same with the other side. It prevented us from flipping it each side for every process of staining and coating.

I have a black walnut island too! I used Waterlox on it as well... just the original for all coats. Yes, how you described is basically how I did it too except I've never used stain on walnut prior as I like the color it turns with just the Waterlox. If you look up videos for using Waterlox from askwoodman he gives GREAT tips and advice. I particularly like his method for vacuuming up the dust between sandings. (You use your hand and a shop vac... it's so much better than using a tac cloth!)
Our kitchen was a DIY gut remodel. My hubby designed and built all of the cabinetry. We used BM Advance paint and primer for all of the painted cabinetry. I included a photo of the walnut before we used the Waterlox. There is no stain, the Waterlox alone brings out the warmth in the walnut.

wow, really nice. When the door arrived, the wood was a lot lighter than I expected, so it's why I used the same stain I used on my base cabinets. I couldn't really test it first because once I put the sealer, I couldn't put stain after the fact. Will see how the counter turns out when it arrives. For that, I can test just Waterlox on the underside that won't show. This is what the Walnut door looked like before I stained it.

Maybe there is a difference between Walnut and Black Walnut?

Yeah, that's lighter than I would've expected too! In the US, as far as I can tell, walnut and black walnut refer to the same thing. I know there are different varieties of walnut trees in other countries though, I don't know how different they look from each other though. I've heard that how the wood is dried can affect the appearance. Also, the heartwood is lighter and more yellow. Hubby and I tend to look for planks with the nice variation between the heartwood and the sapwood because we like the difference, we look for nice burling and movement too, it's exciting when we find it and we try to make sure those parts are highlighted in the projects he does. But a lot of people appreciate a more uniform appearance with the walnut. Each has their place depending on the project. Anyways, your door ended up beautiful and you should be really proud of it!

so you actually bought the planks and made the counter yourself? :-O

Yes... well not me... my hubby... but we pick them out together, and we choose which planks go in which order together, and I do all of the finish work like any staining or Waterlox. If we are doing any painting (like we did on the cabinetry, which hubby also built in our garage) then I do any painting if it's done by brush, but hubby does all painting with the spray gun. He's particularly good with the spray gun, but I'm much better with a brush than he is. But yeah... the wood was all joined together and my 7 foot Long Island was sticking out past 10 feet before we held our breath and he pulled the trigger on the saw to make the cuts for the waterfall edge on the island. We had never done anything quite like that before and we'd paid a premium for boards that were long enough for this purpose. We figured if the cut was messed up we would use the edge meant for the waterfall for some other purpose one day and then we'd just end up with a wood top and cabinet panels for both sides instead of just one side. (The side closest to my sink is a cabinetry panel with an electric outlet and a towel bar for dish towels.) He must've measured the thing a gazillion times before he made the cut, LOL! But it came out perfectly and we were very pleased. There are some minor mistakes in other areas of the countertop, but most anybody would be hard pressed to notice them, but that waterfall cut went just perfectly. Whew! LOL!

In fact, the photo that shows the counter in its raw state, pre-Waterlox, the waterfall part is not even attached yet. Hubby had just made the cut that day and one of our sons and I are holding it up steady so he could get a good look at how it matched up. LOL!

awesome job.. even though you paid premium for the boards, I'm certain it. would have been 4 to 5 thousand if not more for someone to build and finish it for you,. That's what it would cost me in PA when I wanted just a 70" x 36" walnut counter in 2013. Now I am ordering it out of state 36" x 101" unfinished for a Lot less than the cost of my original smaller countertop idea and doing all the finishing myself. I do all the painting both by hand and with my sprayer. Can I ask what you purchased to attach the counter?

I assume you meant how did he attach the counter to the cabinetry? He had blocking supports (wood) in the top of the cabinets and he used screws with predrilled holes that allowed for the contraction and expansion of the wood. We didn't use any steel beams or anything if that's what you're asking. We didn't attach the waterfall edge to the floor, it's just floating. The island cabinet itself is attached to the floor though. (Actually, I can't recall if there are any screws between the side of the island and the waterfall edge... I just don't remember)

Oh wait... maybe you meant how did he attach the waterfall edge to the top counter? I think he used dowels...

the person who installed our kitchen said our island is so large and heavy even before the 100"x39" 1 3/4" thick counter goes on, that it might not have to be attached to the floor if all of the cabinets 4 total are screwed together. the counter maker gives you metal L brackets that go under the 12" overhang that also have a groove under the counter it sits inside. it was more of the other areas of the counter I wondered about :-)
