Sliding Barn Door
This door looks rustic but appeals in modern and contemporary spaces too.
Sliding barn doors hang on a rail system that allows them to move sideways to open and close. This not only eliminates the need to allow for extra floor space that a swing operation would require, it is often a necessity considering their typical size and weight. While these doors usually resemble their namesakes, the system can be used with any style door.
You can picture this barn door actually on a barn, but it works just as well indoors. The original benefit of a barn door rail system was that it slid open even in heavy snow.
Sliding barn doors can either open to one side or slide apart, like these glass panels.
This staircase has a pocket built into the first four steps so that the barn door can slide into the space.
A barn door can slide open a little or a lot without taking up extra floor space.
Any door, new or salvaged, can be hung by a sliding barn door rail system. If you want a sleeker look, holes can be filled and hinge recesses can be planed off easily; however, this vintage door still has the original swing door hardware on it.
