bugs in the yard

my backyard lawn has so many bugs that they seem to fly up every time I walk or mow it. I really dont know what the bugs are called . can some one help me know it's name . can i use a general bug control like ortho. do you have reccomendations on what I can use to be bug free as far as possible. thanks

Where are you located? I'm in the midwest and I have these small white flying things every time I walk through. I was looking at a product by jonathan green which is basically essential oils that deter bugs if you might want to look at a natural product.

If indeed boxelder bugs, relatively easy to kill with 1 tablespoon of Dawn detergent in a half gallon of water. But, must be a direct hit! The detergent breaks down the protective oils on their exoskeleton and they desiccate. If they just walk over the dried soap, does nothing. Horticultural soaps work, too. hortster

They aren't nice. One year, I had an infestation of them on my tomatoes. They would suck and disfigure the fruits. Fortunately, they're pretty easy to catch, but by the time I realized I had a problem, I had to take a few minutes every day carefully inspecting the plants looking for them. I hear that a portable vacuum cleaner is a handy tool with which to suck them up. Other years, I just see an occasional one. Get 'em early. Once they start laying eggs, life gets hard. The "leaf foot" is the identifying marker. Their legs have little flaps down near the ends. You won't see those on other, otherwise similar bugs (stink bugs, assassin bugs).

Difficult to make any specific comments without more information though one thing to keep in the back of your mind is that certain types of insect damage is an indicator sign of turf stress or disease. Adding "insult to injury", as it were.

A thick healthy lawn at the proper height etc., is better able to resist insect infestations and/or the critters don't find it as tempting. Not sure why that is exactly, but it is well documented.

I have little white things flying up out of the turf when I mow. I've seen them for 40 years. The grass looks good, so I don't do anything.
