ID this very old rose?
Comments (53)Oh, goody - I like having mysteries! Re the buff color - it turns out it ONLY does that in dark shade, where my original one is. The mature one growing in the sun does not do that - it blooms fade to white, not buff. So, trospero, I'll bet you have never seen blooms of Awakening which have grown in full shade. Re the petal configuration, it changes constantly - I will post some more pics of the one at my SIL's house. I understand the timing issue re Awakening, but if a rose sports once, why can it not sport the same way in another location? I am ignorant - don't know the odds, but I have heard of that happening. Do any of you think it is New Dawn? I ask because 2 people at the Celebration of Roses told me "it looks similar to New Dawn, but it is NOT New Dawn".. I have learned over the years that the old mystery roses which were planted in my garden by my DH's ancestors were popular roses when they were planted. They got them, I am told, at the West End Nursery in San Rafael (which turns out to be the oldest still operating nursery in California). My point is, New Dawn is just the sort of rose they would have planted, and perhaps it sported to Awakening just like the Czech one did? Here is another pic from my SIL's one - Jackie...See MoreCan anyone help me ID this rose? Old rose on old homesite.
Comments (17)Your rose looks similar to a rose in the Sacramento Cemetery, our found rose, "Dr Peck's 12th Avenue Smoothie" is thornless, once blooming. Very fragrant. This found rose is thought to be the same as the Charles Lawson in commerce. Below is a link to a photo I took in the cemetery a few years ago. I liked this rose so much that I propagated it and planted it in my yard even though it is a once bloomer. It is quite vigorous and now takes up the back corner along the fence. Comments (27)I always thoroughly enjoy walking by this rose, and I think I will have to at least try to get a cutting. The plant itself is HUGE, y'all. It has grown into a very interesting shape with one large stem (like at least 4" thick) growing completely horizontally along the ground so that it looks like 2 plants that take up that whole bed. I'm pretty sure it's just one plant, though. I couldn't get into the bush far enough to see how big around the base is. I have a much larger yard than I used to (when space was too challenging to plant larger roses), so I should be able to find a good spot for it. I will be posting the rest of the pics now, maybe in multiple posts. Thanks for all the help, everyone! Keep it coming!...See MoreAny ID guesses for old moss rose?
Comments (7)Romogen, I just looked up Laneii, and it does look VERY similar. Maybe a bit mossier? The poor rose in my neighborhood ("my" rose) is in such sad shape that it's hard to know what buds s/he'd produce under ideal circumstances. Also, the moss on "my" rose looks greener than the moss in the online photos of Laneii. If my memory serves me well, many moss roses have brownish tinted moss. Salet is one exception in my garden. In your experience, is the green moss on "my" rose a helpful indicator of identity? I'm just now collecting moss roses again after moving away from my past collection 15 years ago. I wish I'd been more observant when I was growing a multitude of mosses. I think James Mitchell is lighter pink. If I am able to rescue a portion of "my" rose, I'll take some more (and hopefully better) photos. Thanks so much! Carol...See Moreportlandmysteryrose
