Paint Design Dilemma Exterior

Help with paint colors on starter home exterior please!!

For now existing brick will be left same color but am open to painting it down the road. For now though, ideas on front door and surrounding entry, beams, and window trim. Lastly, doesn't this house need shutters or no? Thanks to any ideas and suggestions.

First of all, I would not paint the brick. You take a zero maintenance product and turn it into a long term maintenance issue. Plus I think your brick looks fine and you can use some colors to tie everything together. My first thought would be a gray since I see that color in your brick. However, I think it needs to be a warmer gray since you already have the brown stained columns.

You have all single windows so shutters would work. Just make sure that the width of each shutter is half the width of the window so, if operable, when closed they would cover the entire window.

I would pick a color for the front door that was different from the trim and shutters (if added) to make it a focal point for the house.

Kevin had some great advice. I might keep the white and paint the columns white as well. Then go classic with black or charcoal shutters. The door could be a bright color or continue the classic black and white theme. Your flowers are beautiful, choose paint that goes with you gardens.

I'm in agreement with you that for your situation something of low contrast would be best. You could have the shutters more or less match the house color (or even go ligher, say a cream color) or a soft green with yellow tones to it. I would let the landscaping provide the color (and I'm so hoping you're not doing grass in your tropical environment) and let it be the lush counterpoint to your cool-looking light colored house. I think it would be beautiful.

Great suggestions - I will look at those this week when we go paint picking. One thing I forgot to mention is that the roof is green metal. I know... that's a BIG thing. That will probably make green a no-go? It's more of a faded dusty green - not mossy or sagey. You can see the green astro turf on the porch that looks pretty accurate for comparison. So, the things we're forced to work with are: green roof, white siding on the eaves and porch & probably black casement windows. We are painting a small bank of windows black this morning as a test. Another thing we thought about is that the interior panes are already black so if we do get a little outside the lines, it won't be a glaring mistake like it is now with the white on the outside. Also, we do have black vintage porch furniture that will serve as an accent. Pardon the mess on the porch - it's a work day around here! Here is a link that might be useful:

This is Agreeable Gray, Extra White and Gauntlet Gray. I actually think it would be a mistake to go too much gray on the body. You will already have a gray roof. Canvas Tan is a little grayer than Patience. I would not use those garage doors shown above. They are a modern design and your house is closer to traditional. I also think the wood grain and side windows when combined with stone would look too busy. I hope one of the professionals will speak to the door as I am just a person like you. What is the name of your HOA? Stay away from Unique Gray. It is lilac color.

Yes, that is a very peachy orange color. I first thought neutral bone/beige but your photo with the lower stone section seems to have a lot of red tones, even in the darker brick. I'm no expert so i would be relying on sample cards, in various tones, and taping them against the brick to view. Some might obviously not work but those that do might be worth a sample pot painted onto large sheets and go through the process again...

That's good advice about the shutters. I. never understood when it was a do or a don't on that issue when size or ample room there. So it's single windows!! That makes sense! Thanks for your input Kevin.

Kathleen- I am leaning towards painting those columns like you suggested. Maybe a brighht cream. Don't know which color yet or have one in mind.

Im trying to download the Sherman Williams app now. Was thinking Urban bronze and Shoni White maybe but will have to see how it looks with the virtual app and go from there.
