Hakone Grass Questions?
Comments (2)Hi. I have 2 Hakonechloa macra 'Aureola' plants, one of which is 7-8 years old,and the other one around 4 y.o. They are in different parts of the garden but do not receive much sun. They have never been mulched but received compost and a mix of kelp, bone meal and leaf mold sprinkled on top when planted. Initially, they were watered daily but after that only as needed during hot spells. One thing the grower told me was not to use spray near the grasses or other plants. People experience a lot of casualties from too concentrated applications of ferti- lizer as well. I know a lot of people have had problems keeping these grasses alive, and there may be other reasons why they don't survive. Overall, the golden culti- vars seem to be more fragile than the green varieties....See Morevariegated hakone grass
Comments (5)I think John is on to something with his suggestion that you are dealing with Phalaris and not Hakone. If it's Phalaris or "Ribbon Grass," do the best thing possible and plant it with an underground barrier all around it somewhere where you can see early or late light through its foliage. I just sheared my ribbon grass to the ground about 2 weeks ago and there is already 10 inches of fresh new foliage standing. What fun as long as you keep the stuff from spreading throughout the garden! I love that it can (and really should) be shorn mid-summer for a fresh push of fine foliage....See MoreLifting and replanting slow growing hakone grass
Comments (4)You never want to overly disturb the roots of an established Japanese maple........it is just an invitation to disease. Hence the response above. Gently remove the grasses that are not thriving and relocate them elsewhere. Replace them with mulch or a very shallow rooted groundcover, like London Pride (Saxifraga x urbium)....See MoreIs seed available for Hakone grass?
Comments (23)Thank you for all your lovely comments. The combination Hakonechloa and Hosta is perfect, but I have potted up almost all my hosta's because of the slugs and snails. Luckily Hakonechloa isn't on their menu. Yes, there is quite a difference in growingspeed and in size between the cultivars. The fastest grower and the largest plant is 'Albo-striata', but it is also not as beautiful as the rest. It is a bit of a sloppy grower, shoots al over the place and not a neat, dense clump. 'Naomi' is like a smaller 'Aureola', but also fast growing. The all green H. macra is an excellent plant, very upright growing. 'Nicolas' is also all green, but a little smaller with better colour in fall. 'Beni Kaze', 'Greenhills' (a small all green) and 'Sunny Delight' (multicoloured) haven't been here for more than 2 seasons....See MoreNHBabs z4b-5a NH
