Lifting and replanting slow growing hakone grass

Patrick

I have a few Japanese forest grasses (Hakonechloa macra 'aurelia') that I planted in fall of 2015 at the base of a Japanese maple. I know their growth rate is slow but a few are really small compared to the others. I'm considering digging these up, creating hole with a 1.5 foot diameter and lining this with a pot with no bottom to crowd out the maple roots. I'm going to fill the pot with very loose textured potting soil because I suspect the combo of my clay soil and maple roots is stunting the grasses growth. Thoughts or advice?
