How would you handle cabinets and these stairs?
Comments (7)I played around with several different configs. This one eliminates the cabinet you had far right on range wall and adds the wine/bookshelf and filler. On the stair wall I put three 30" x 30" uppers which should end right at the 1" post. I have the post starting at 8'9". I added 15" uppers at the top. We could do the blind corner but I wasn't sure if you wanted that. It has different symmetry, 21" door, 36" cab (two 18" doors), and 21" door. This ends right at the post, but I'm afraid it won't work since it butts right up to the soffitt. I have an appointment right now, but can play around with different versions later this evening if you give me input on what to try....See MorePaid $600 and I'm right where I started. Comments (12)Billie Leeth, 'Most' air conditioning companies are set up in which the license holder of the HVAC company sits in an office and the tech's (and when I say tech, I use the term loosely) run service. So if you take a contractor to small claims court for some 'act' the license holder shows up to court, unless you are somehow knowledgeable enough to know 'who' was sent to your home for the actual service. The judge asks you if this man was the one who 'said --- this or that'. You say no, it must have been an employee of the company. The judge then informs you cannot quote what this person said to you because it is HEARSAY. You know this the part of show in which I reveal the magic 8 ball. Because this is all hypothetical we don't know because no information was provided to the contrary. -------------- Mike, there is a provision in the law that doesn't allow 'intentional' venting to any degree. Realize what I posted in the post a few posts back is a small snippet of the law. Venting: De minimis / Intentional / Accidental are different parts of the same law. If an operational AC system is low on charge there are instances in which improper or lax methods in servicing may have occurred and as such a contractor can take approaches to rule these things out as a cause for the refrigerant leak and be well within the range of the law. If you have an old AC scrap pile in which the equipment was used to pump down the equipment and the person recycling said equipment is knowledgeable enough to know this equipment has refrigerant in it but 'intentionally' vents the refrigerant. They are breaking the law as it was written. Mistakes do happen, the law allows for what is called 'incidents' in which something occurs in which illegal venting occurs due to sudden rupture of the appliance or in which a mistake is made by the servicer. If you are on a scrap pile and you cut into a system thinking the system is devoid of refrigerant and it blows the charge this could be deemed an accidental release of refrigerant. However, if after that system you start stripping another system and blow the charge on that system it would no longer be considered an 'accident'. In the modern era of cell phone video a case like this would essentially be a 'slam dunk'. If a AC service contractor runs a service call in which the system in question is devoid of refrigerant (flat), which in most cases signifies a leak in which recharging the system could be deemed an 'intentional' release of refrigerant due to the severity of the leak. This example is to show you the 'context' of the law and how it was written....See MoreHow Would You Handle This Living Room/Dining In Farmhouse Theme?
Comments (66)Justin, we built a house in 1985 that reminds me a lot of your house. I really struggled with finding and placing furnishings that fit the scale and drama and rather oddly shaped spaces ( that we specified). We now live in a small farmhouse on a small horse farm. White plastered walls, white painted trim.Much easier. May I suggest you look at Texas Hill Country farmhouses for inspiration? They tend to be strongly defined but simple, sometimes incorporating "Spanish" elements, if you like those. ( This is kind of random, I do think your front door should be changed. It doesn't seem to fit either farmhouse or the house, in my opinion. You can do better.) PS. In this soaring space, pay close attention to your fixture choices. I think the one shown in this Hill Country house would fit well, for example, but the right scale, no matter the style, will really make a difference....See MoreHow would you handle this? Comments (65)I feel your pain! I had the reverse problem. When I was married I had to stay with my in-laws in their tiny but lovely cabin in Canada. There was nowhere to go for any quiet time. We slept in a walk through bedroom between to five year olds and 8 adults. It was a nightmare. Plus they all spoke French so I did not even have any idea of what they were saying. I had a total panic attack. This visit was for ten days. I told my then husband I could never do it again. He did not understand and said it would hurt their feelings if we were to stay in nearby hotel or airbnb. For the next visit I was certain that he would understand my need for a seperate place to stay. He would not do it. I was so stressed out about that visit. Especially given the fact that we hosted his niece for six months to go to high school abroad and of course, stayed with us. I was the one to drive her everywhere. It is a long story. Then, the entire family came and stayed with us at the end of her program. It was all more than I could handle. It was right after that visit that we were to go visit them. Long story short (or even longer...given all I have typed here), I had a panic attach or maybe I should say a nervous breakdown and we did not go. My husband resented me to no end. I think honesty is the best policy. However, I would say it in the nicest way possible. Maybe something like this..... We are looking forward to your visit, we got you a hotel (or airbnb) five minutes away. We thought it would be nice for each of our families to have our own space. Then discuss activities you all will be doing together. If they are hurt or insulted then that is just what is going to happen. Never put yourself in a situation where your own mental health will sufffer greatly. Maybe others will disagree with me, but having gone through it I know that is what I would do. My breakdown was no laughiing matter and it was the beginning of the end of my marriage. Sorry for this extrememly long post! Amy...See Moreeld6161
