How would you handle cabinets and these stairs?

Our current kitchen plan has a peninsula extending about 10" past the visible support post. That stairwell was open with spindles but we are going to frame it out and drywall it to allow upper cabinets on the kitchen side. We want to leave the other side of the stairs as it was with spindles.

How do we handle the 10" or so of the peninsula that will extend past the post? Should we drywall right to the end of the stairs on this side and address the other side of the steps like this? Or just do a half wall on the small bit after the post?

I should also mention we plan on moving the stairs back by 1 step to increase head space when walking down the stairs.

Here is a rendition both ways with cabinets up to the post and wall extending 9" beyond the post. It's more open with the stub wall. I added some bookcases since you mentioned them and an additional way to approach the corner uppers.

Oh my gosh thanks for the visual. I think no to the bookcases and yes to the part wall :) Did you change the upper cabinets on the stair wall to wrap with the range wall? Which 2 cabinets from IKEA are they?

Thanks scrappy25. We can purchase the cabinet doors / skins and have the carpenter make the insides. However, in this option, it is still 1K more than using the sliding doors. Also, DH brought up a point last night after looking at the cabinet images from the KDÃ¢ÂÂ¦since we cannot go to the ceiling with the pantry (due to header on that wall), the top of the pantry cabinet will be shorter than the rest of the cabinets in the space. So, he was also concerned that by using the same cabinet doors, it might look "odd". Maybe we can get the cost down by using a different door style / wood / finish for that area (possibly matching the island).

Dovetail drawers are a common standard component in cabinet construction. The cab sub orders them from a supplier. It's no problem. Most mid grade and up cabinet drawers come with dovetail box construction. Another common drawer component is Blumotion slides possibly with soft close. Talking to the sub before he gives a quote about these is a normal practice. A specific type of lazy susan is the same. This is locking down components that affect the construction. Once the sub knows these parts are part of the project he can determine his costs and give the GC a price for the number of cabinets this particular job requires him to supply. The same applies to different door styles and wood varieties, paint finishes or other finishing affects. I'm sure you picked those too. There is no standard price because every kitchen has a different number of cabinets of different types. One kitchen can have $3k in cabs and the next $10k. That's why the cab sub is there before the contract price is presented. You told him what you wanted. He told the GC what his part of the job would cost. The GC figured his total cost and profit and gave you a price. You accepted his offer. That's all you owe. The sub is trying to overcharge the GC. He needs to go back to the sub for a refund. Which is probably something he has a lot of power to do because the sub has worked with him and wants to continue working with him on future jobs. Stand firm. Don't accept his verbiage about not making any money. He's making a healthy amount for his work. Next time you work with him require a complete list of specs as part of his contract offer. Write in any changes in pen before you sign. They supersede printed provisions and are controlling when the contract is signed.

@maddielee I cannot make any changes unfortunately. 4 bedrooms is what pulled us in initially, but we can easily manage with 3. @jck910 Good suggestion. and @User I love the idea of side-lites. Undertaking the task of blowing out a wall, along with the outer brickwall, sounds daunting, though! @Christine Lampert Imo I think this would be fantastic and have a really nice well-lit view down the hallway. I'm going to have to do some research to see how the value of the house would change if we reduced the house to 3bdr with a second living area. I can't imagine it changing that much, but I'm also very new to the home owner world.

Oly, the first reason I wouldn't discuss with a young boy is because for a lot of boys, having a friend's grandmother discuss his urination habits would be mortifying to a lot of boys.. cutesy discussion or direct, it's just not the place of someone not in his family IMO. Also, it could be something physical that you are not aware of-- one of my nephews had a number of surgeries involving his plumbing and apparatus (trying to foil filters). Not only did that condition affect his aim-- or even ability to aim until after the 3rd or 4th surgery-- but it made him very sensitive to any discussion of anything related to the plumbing/apparatus. His condition, while not "common", wasn't an unusual one. And as Feather notes, it could most definitely be misconstrued-- especially 2nd hand through a child.

I played around with several different configs. This one eliminates the cabinet you had far right on range wall and adds the wine/bookshelf and filler. On the stair wall I put three 30" x 30" uppers which should end right at the 1" post. I have the post starting at 8'9". I added 15" uppers at the top. We could do the blind corner but I wasn't sure if you wanted that. It has different symmetry, 21" door, 36" cab (two 18" doors), and 21" door. This ends right at the post, but I'm afraid it won't work since it butts right up to the soffitt. I have an appointment right now, but can play around with different versions later this evening if you give me input on what to try.

Here are a few corner ideas. The range wall is not accurate without knowing the range wall final measurement after framing and drywall of the stair wall. I used the 9" wine shelf. You can use this as shelves. The first with the uppers as you last had it. It's an unfitted look. Is that what you're going for?

And the next with a dead corner and filler. This one you could wrap crown.

This one reduces the cabs to 30" so you can wrap the corner with the Ikea blind.

You can't do that without creating a 15" riser. Math is cruel like that.

I’m not loving the shorter cabinets under the soffit converging with the taller cabinets. How about no uppers on the stove wall and tall uppers on the sonk wall?

Joseph - we are moving the entire stair structure back. To do this the flooring upstairs is being cut back by one stair length so the stairs can shift back. There is room to do this.

The soffit really is causing some problems. I don't mind the unfitted look , it is a cottage. The range wall measurements are pretty accurate since we accounted for the framing and drywall.

Emily's idea is worth exploring with shelves on the range wall and taller cabinets on the sink and stair wall. I don't have time to play with it today but will try t get back to it this weekend. The IKEA sale ends Apr 16th so we need to come up with a final plan !
