OK, that was interesting! Earthquake!
Comments (12)Whoa! That was scary! I'm in Dumfries, VA, which is an hour north of the epicenter and about 25 miles south of Washington D.C. I work on 3rd and top floor of an office building and I had just gotten back from lunch. I was typing away in my cubicle and I felt this rumbling...at first I thought that maybe it was a sonic boom or some sort of explosives training at the base at Quantico (they do that at times), but then it kept going and getting stronger. I looked to the man who works across the isle from me and we looked at each other like, "WTF is THIS???!! Holy crap this is an EARTHQUAKE!" Things were falling off the wall, potted plants were crashing down, the building was moving, and the windows were cracking. I never ran down flights of stairs in heels as fast as I did today! Our whole building evacuated and our company closed for the rest of the day. At home, I live 2 miles away from work, pictures had crashed off the walls, plates and platters had fallen. The kitties were freaked out. But nothing was lost that was valuable and everyone is o.k....shaken (pun intended), but o.k. I've never been through an earthquake before and it is not something I want to experience again....See MoreOT: Earthquake
Comments (14)So relieved to hear you're alright & your home undamaged! Thought of you when the news broke - thanks for letting us know. Read the quake was felt in Chicago & Texas. Late in August of 2011, a quake of 5.8 with the epicenter 30 miles away shook us up. You were so close to the origin, must have been even more intense. Fifteen minutes before it traveled through here, one of our dogs became highly agitated, crying & pacing. Couldn't figure out why as both dogs cowered under my desk. Then I heard what seemed a fast-moving freight train roaring down on us, crossing the property from one end to the other. Held onto the desk to keep from being thrown from my chair. Never encountered one before & hope to never again! Knew instinctively it was an earthquake & that our dear dog had been trying to warn us. Aftershocks continued for several days. When we came here, we added an earthquake rider to our homeowner's insurance policy, though the last quake happened more than a century earlier. Agent had to look it up & thought it a ridiculous inclusion, but I insisted. Until this last quake, ran about $15 a year, now up to $50. Thankfully, we found no resulting damage that time. Agent called to check on us, and ate his words about what a spendthrift I'd been, as he was suddenly adding earthquake riders to many policies. Are you sure you can't add one to yours? Sure hope so. Found this article about birds taking flight before your earthquake - same time frame as our dog Rosie felt the approach. http://tinyurl.com/gsvwt3x...See MoreO/T So Cal Storm Friday
Comments (9)We lucked out north of Santa Barbara, only four inches with another .7" forecast by Tuesday. Santa Maria was wisely designed with many spreading grounds to catch the storm run off. Yesterday, all the sports fields and parks around us were full, allowing the water to soak back into the aquifer which supplies a large part of our drinking water. Today was supposed to be partly sunny, except it continues to be very blustery with scattered showers. My rain gauge shows nearly half an inch today. There is actually, finally water flowing in the river....See MoreOT: Winterizing...in coastal SoCal?
Comments (36)plllog, we have a similar "micro-climate" here in Michigan. All along the lakeshore is zone 6, but less than 25 miles inland it's a whole 'nother zone, zone 5. Not as dramatic a change as skiiing and beaches, but it's always 10 degrees cooler at The Lake in the summer and 10 degrees warmer in the winter. sarah, we visited Dana Point while we were there too, I was looking for a date shake. Never did find one... Lars, hopefully I'll be seeing you this summer! Ellen, I'm sure we'll come again, but Jeremy comes here because he grew up here, his mother and brothers are here, and all the cousins. So, other family members visit occasionally but to see everyone, they have to come here. He likes July, LOL. Anyway, back to winterization! I saw the weather report, it's supposed to be down to 2F this weekend. I'm hoping my asparagus and garlic are mulched well enough as all the snow melted and that acts as insulation when it gets very cold. No snow, no insulating effect, hopefully those things are hardy enough to survive. Especially the asparagus, it's easier to grow more garlic. Annie...See MoreLisa Adams
