Upsetting a robin with eggs in a nest
Comments (3)1) Will upsetting the robins occasionally (hanging up laundry 2-3x/day) cause them to abandon the nest? Yes. And if the eggs hatch, you can scare the nestlings out of the nest prematurely. 2) Are there certain times of day that they tend to not be in the nest so I can work around those times? No. 3) Do we need to just avoid the deck area until they hatch and leave the nest? If so, how long is that? The eggs hatch after about 15 days and then the young leave the nest 18-20 days later. We usually hang up all our laundry outside so this is a pain but we do not want to upset the birds. Our 4 children will love to see the eggs hatch. : ) It will be worth the sacrifice. Keep a distance, listen to the chicks' begging cries and watch the parents go to and from feeding them....See MoreMissing robins
Comments (1)Sounds like a predator of some type got the eggs and maybe the mother (hard to know unless there were feathers nearby). In the event that a predator got hold of the eggs (a snake, raccoon, squirrel, jay or other corvid, cat or some other critter), the parents will abandon that nest, and build another in a different location. Robins are altricial, so the babies would have remained in the nest for about two weeks, whereas then the babies would leave and be fledglings, following the father around and learning how to feed on their own, while mama sets on yet another nest. Generally, they will have two nests per season, sometimes more....it's safe to say that perhaps your pair are elsewhere, on another nest. . ....See MoreOT: Robins
Comments (3)I believe Robins might use the same nest twice, but every Robin's nest I have ever seen has either fallen out of the tree or knocked down by a predator. They don't always choose the safest locations. One robin built a nest on a beam supporting my neighbor's deck; drove her cats crazy. So funny to watch the cats peeking through the cracks watching the robins (but they could not reach through, thank heavens, they are indoor cats). One morning though, the nest was found empty on the ground, hopefully the young fledged before that. BlueBars...See MoreRobin egg/nest questions
Comments (2)In addition, you don't know what stage of incubation another nest would be in. So, if the incubation periods are messed up, the other eggs (or both sets) still may or may not hatch. I would just leave it and let nature take its course. Robins are robust and able to readily renest after a failed nest attempt....See MoreSaypoint zone 6 CT
