Why dot a pie with butter?

Making this season's first rhubarb pie and DH wanted to help. Actually he jumped in and took over, so I decided to do something else. (Been like that since he retired.) He put the pie in the oven and I casually asked, 'Did you dot the filling with butter?' Of course he didn't. He barely read the recipe.

After he said several words I can't repeat here, he pulled the pie out of the oven and was trying to figure out how to add butter without taking off the top crust. Again I left the room. He ended up trying to add it through the slits.

He asked me later, 'Why do you have to add butter to a pie?' I did a search but can't find the answer. It was the way I was taught and have been doing it that way for over 55 years is my only explanation. And all recipes say to do it. I bet it would have been fine without it. I tried telling him that but he wouldn't listen.
