I don't always listen because I'm stubborn. : ) I had laundry in a closet off the kitchen in a condo I was in for 12 years and never had a humidity issue. Is your washer one of those steam jobs? Mine was a simple stackable from 20 years ago. My "new" ones are still 10+ years old and were also installed in that condo prior to my move. I tend to stay away from lots of extras that I won't use when purchasing appliances. As for "travel time", it's funny you mention that. Right now our dining room is in the position you see it in these plans, but the kitchen is through another room and to the right. We walk through the original dining room to get to the new one. In any case, while I take that to heart I really want the sink looking at the yard and not the fence (with a 5' setback). The single user is a good point, but I think if we move the range it will be better. Good point about the cutting board. Neither of our current ones are near the fridge. I also need to think about trash. Prior to adding the lower bookshelf, I was planning to put it at the end of that counter run. It's in a similar location now (also in a walkway) and it doesn't bug us. Hmmm....trash.... I was trying to think how I can use retractable doors on the laundry, or even a barn-type sliding door to "clean up" the traffic zone. I'm still stumped on my options here. And I really appreciate the specifics on cabinet sizes to move the range. I want to see if I can move the "baking sheet" cabinet to the 6" space next to the sink where the KD put drawers. I don't bake and I don't have little things to put in 6" drawers - except junk! Thanks again for the input - you've given us good discussion points. I'm going to take some pictures of our current 1990's Handyman Special Kitchen for some laughs. Comments (7)Thank you all for the input. Remodelfla: It seem like every house here has angled counters. Part of the reason is that we have a great view of the mountains that direction. I currently have stacked ovens but hate leaning over the hot oven door as I am only 5'2". But the new kitchen will have a steam oven with a side opening door so that will not be an issue. My favorite part of the stacked oven is the drawer right under the cooktop for pots and pans. About the freezer in the pantry, we currently have a subzero fridge in the kitchen and freezer in the adjacent mudroom which is only made tolerable because we have an icemaker next to the fridge. Lisa A: the island will probably be a little bit bigger. Our builder just dropped that in. We have yet to meet with the cabinet people. The prep sink was oriented wrong. I want to access it from inside the corner. The plan was it to be DH's space. A place to make coffee in the morning, wash and prep veggies(next to fridge, sink and butcher block top.) Also, it could serve as bar area while entertaining. I plan to have glasses in that area and keep the liquor cabinet there as well (but not accessed from the outside as show.) As far as the desk, I totally agree. We currently have a kitchen desk and it is a clutter magnet and is rarely used as a desk. I do use the printer there and a laptop which is most often on the table or counter. I mainly want a place to keep the printer, a place for pens and paper, and to hide the laptop when company comes. I was thinking of secretary desk, armoire, or hutch with hidden desk. More of a furniture piece rather than integrated into the cabinet desk, like we have now. We will have a study off the master that will serve as the main desk area. I also plan to eventually put a desk in the mudroom to serve as either/or a crafting area or homework desk area. Marcolo: I have thought about what I do when I cook. I am currently in a kitchen that is a dream for a single cook, but add a second person just getting a glass of water and it is a nightmare. My plan was to have 2 functional areas. DH's zone (and I may even mark the floor with tape haha) would be by the fridge while I am by the cooktop, near the other end of the butcher block for extra chopping, by the sink to wash as I go, load the dishwasher etc. I also placed the sink and dw close to the main eating table and close to plate, glass and flatware storage. Bmorepanic. It is a nice design, but we have a great view off the back deck and anticipate spending lots of time outside and thus want a bathroom close by. Also a desk isn't a must have. We also placed the FP more centrally for heat. We now have a woodburning stove in our kitchen and I love using it to heat just the space where are most. We are a family of 3, 2 adults who like to cook and a 9 month old. I entertain for bigger groups 12-16 once maybe twice a year. We have family and smaller groups over (4-6) maybe 2x/month. Our formal dining room rarely gets used (3-4x/year). As with most, everyone ends up hanging out in the kitchen. We will eventually have outdoor kitchen as well on the covered patio. DH (and ex�s) house is currently on the market so we are doing a 2 (or more) stage construction. We are building the basics and planning for upgrades (the outdoor kitchen where we will plumb for water, gas, sewer and leave it with just our basic gas grill for now; an unfinished basement, hold on the mudroom and laundry built-ins, etc). Comments (11)My wife normally does most of the cooking for our family but has friends who also enjoy cooking and will help out when over, so up to 3 people working in the kitchen at a time. Breakfast and lunch will likely be at island (we figured we could seat up to four there (three at outside edge and one just around the corner across from the entry to the pantry) dinner will be at the dining table which is just out of shot in the drawing but part of an open concept layout. In terms of types of cooking... a bit of everything really, stirfries, braises, roasts. She only bakes occasionally but has been known to make macarons, meringues, and other types of treats for teachers gifts/ parties, etc. (hence the preference for electric oven). We would go with a dual fuel range but that isn't a possibility with the BlueStar. We usually don't entertain large groups probably up to 12 at a time. We have a desk drawn in but during our site visit today we realized it's sort of puny and the kids will likely prefer to pull up to the island for homework rather than staring at the wall so we thought we would turn that area into a concealed storage for phone, mail, stationery, etc. In terms of the refrigeration, we figured a 36" fridge and 30" freezer would be adequate based on what we are currently using.... although feedback is helpful here as kids are still small. We do have a secondary fridge & deep freeze currently which could reside in the garage but we've also considered ditching those for a secondary fridge in the pantry just to keep the groceries central to the kitchen. My wife is the only coffee drinker in the house and we currently have a very compact Nespresso machine which serves the purpose, I don't think we need a dedicated breakfast bar/ coffee bar area. In terms of the range hood, there is a second floor but we've allocated space for the ventilation to pass through (behind a closet) to the roof with hopes of mounting the fan remotely to reduce noise. Comments (28)God help us. Forget the imfamous kitchen work triangle. It's dated (and was only really designed for small kitchens). Most of us who actually cook spend a lot of time in the prep area so you want to optimize fridge to prep (both countertop and sink) to cooking appliances (and it's rare that you go from the stove back to the fridge frequently). We also factored in the clean up area (landing zone, sink, dishwasher) into our plans. We also set up a "coffee" area next to the fridge at the "fringe" of the kitchen so people fetching drinks don't interfere with the real chefs. My wife hates corners so both our blind corners have appliance garages and the three corners have cute little slide out rev-a-shelf contractions to allow full access to the back areas. We like our "next to the stove" cabinets as that's where the oils and spices go that are frequently used there....See MoreDaniel
