Truck bed camping design ideas?

Im building a setup to venture across america and camp out the back of my truck, I know its a bit strange to want to have it look nice, as its just a camping setup, but I want it to look homey and comfortable, anyone have some ideas for the curtain color/design and what color bed sheets? I was originally thinking a brownish plaid kinda thing to go with the drawers I made, but now Im not sure if maybe they should be a lighter color to make the space seem larger. I was also thinking of doing a wood border thing to hold the mattress (a twin of course) and a small side table/cabinet. Also not sure what to put for flooring. Any suggestions would be much appreciated, Thanks!

My friend did that. He used a hammock in the back of his truck. Set up a solar collector to power his computer. Camped all the way across country.

Have you tried the truck bed with the mattress? Looks like it might be tight.

What do you mean by flooring? I'd avoid unnecessary heavy stuff. Gas mileage, you know!

I am totally intrigued with boondocking and would love to try it some day. I came across this youtube video a while ago and I think an update was made to this design if you can find it. I like this design.

Thank you. I had ford F450 before. deisel engin was much biger than Isuzu, Nissan,Hino Mitusbishi trucks and more Ford dealers and repair shop are near by. The Flat bed dump had 12 ton hydaulic pump, I made 4 feet high side. The flat bed dump truck has more cargo space and we don't have snow here. 35 years ago I drove Isuzu 7.5 ton dump truck in Japan which had slightly smaller engin than Ford F450. time to time,I over loading gravel, house manure, then big engine helps..... 30 years ago most 1 ton, 1.5 ton Japanese truck already had exhust brake and paseger car like seat. but I like big Ford 7.3 Deisel engine. About 2 years ago, i met a local fellow who is about 25 years younger than me, and he has a hard side camping trailer, the kind with the canvas covered front bunk. He allowed that he was going out west to Arizona, for his vacation trip. He bought a GMC Sport-utility to tow with. and installed an auxiliary tranny cooler, and was worried about maybe having car trouble out there on the big old hiway! He asked me if, in our many years of hauling campers and stand-up trailers, if i worried about having a break-down on the road. Gee! When i think of the used cars i'd get to tow with, and how far we'd usually go on a trip, Maybe we were fat, dumb, and happy! But--we never had a new car or truck. Never could afford one, and didn't think it was very smart to tie up a pile of money in car payments. I'd get home from work, the boys would have every thing hooked up and ready to go. We''d grab a bite, and clean up and go! Sometimes to Hickory Hills Camp in Ohio, or our Bluegrass Park, north of Kittanning, Pa. Usually if ya do break down on the hiway, a cop will come along fairly soon and get ya some help. When he heard of how we'd just "go", and not worry about the tow vehicle' he just shook his head.

Hippy is correct, I'm talking RVs here for folks who don't wrench their own. Your Silverado has a great Allison transmission that's the gold standard, IMHO. There's a hill of difference in labor between an auto or truck and an RV with an engine in it. The Left Coast is very mountainous and it gets old fast to be on an incline pulling your boat/quads/trailer/horses at 45 and be passed by a DuraMax doing 75. And you'll wish you were getting 12 mpg pulling that horse trailer at 45. The current GMC engines are 200,000 mile designs (Sierra, Silverado, Tahoe, Suburban, Yukon) and the diesels (DuraMax) are 500,000 mile designs. Teardrops will have lower height which will pay off in mileage and many nicer campsites will be an option, where the truck campers (popups and crankups excluded here) will be scraping a few branches or down in the meadow. Of course, it's easier to back up a truck camper so there's a world of options out there. I've sold a ton of GMC trucks and as a Ford man let me say they're hard to beat.

Hey, what is wrong with a Cheetos bag, especially from the perspective of a high schooler? LOL I think I would move the bed unit to the wall that the door is on. That way when you look into the room it isn't the first thing that you see, so that it overwhelms the space. Also, I think the wall it is on currently could be put to better use. Be sure you mount some kind of shelf up on the wall by the bed, so that he can put an alarm clock up there. You will want to mount a swing-arm lamp up on the wall so that he can read in bed and not have to get down to turn off lights. Have a comforter, not a bedspread, for ease of making the bed. This bedding from Penney's might be perfect: stan comforter I would get a drafting table or something along those lines, and put that in the corner where the windows all meet. That will give him great light for working on schoolwork and puzzles. Then the two seating pieces can be down that wall and into the opposite corner a bit near the closet door. Maybe a inexpensive small plastic or RTA table between the two seating pieces. I would do the orange as a stripe that runs around the room, as wide and at the same level as the space between the bottom of the bunk and the back support brace on the bed unit (about desk height. That should put it just above about 30 inches at the bottom, so just above chair rail height. Behind the desk in that area, instead of just an orange stripe, make it orange-painted corkboard or bulletin boards so that he has a place to hang stuff related to school and other reminders, a calendar, etc. I would look for other ways to bring in the orange, like painting the fam blades, a couple of throw pillows in a wild print that includes the blues and oranges, orange frames on artwork or photos. You could also consider adding orange stitching lines to your denim walls, done every so many inches to mimic the stitching on denim jeans. Oh, and I don't think a 14x14 room is small at all. Our younger son had a similar unit in his room when younger, and that space was 10.5x11 with 8 ft. ceilings. Didn't overwhelm that room at all. More room than two people have in the typical college dorm room, too. Looks like you have had fun and done a great job on the walls!

By flooring I just mean what to do besides bare plywood lol, paint, canvas, plastic, carpet, anything, weight is of absolutely no concern to me honestly as long as I'm not laying down hardwood flooring or anything lol, it'll be negligible compared to everything else I'll be carrying. I LOVE the idea of a solar charger, I'll have to look into that more. I have had the mattress in there and it does fit nicely length wise, itll be tight but it fits.

@ilikefriday that is a very nice setup, unfortunately my bed isn't as big but he's got some good ideas and nice work, thanks for the info

Are you familiar with Bob Wells or Cheaprvliving.com? If you have not already, I encourage you to take a look at his youtube channel and website. He talks extensively about solar panels and where to get them, what to do about using the bathroom, bathing, etc. He also interviews several boondockers and tours their rigs. Also, he hosts a twice a year, I think, gathering for boondockers to meet. I think its call the RTR.

You did a great job, did you finish it? I would like to see the result of your work. I dream about some RV for traveling, may be someday I will buy one. Now my budget doesn't afford me this. Recently my grandfather proposed me his old sprinter and I am thinking about to renovate it like you did. I am looking for ideas and I liked like your work. I don't need much to have but still there are big work to do. I want to do a place to sleep and to sit. I need a wardrobe for my stuffs, I think under and above the bed will be a place for shelves. Also I think to buy a small stove and fridge. And of course some little things like the lanterns, curtains, bedspread, pillows for decor. I hope I will be able to do all this work soon and to go camping.
