Hey ya'll lets get ready for camping!

Hey all you Happy Campers out there, are you ready to get out and enjoys the great outdoors? I know I am. I am usually in the garden forum but saw this and thought wow, what a neat idea to have a forum for camping.

I have an old Honey, not my hubby but its the make of the motorhome. Its old, it has pink and grey carpet, its ugly but we have a blast in it. I have hot water, a memory foam on my bed and a good book.

After swimming, boating, fishing and playing all day, I love to have hobo dinners, then a campfire, and then settle into my lovely bed with a book some chocolate, and the quiet. Ahhh...nature,,, ain't she grand ?

Sounds like you learned the secret! Yep--we did all that, over about 50 years. Station wagon campers, old Nimrod tent trailer, (one of the first ones made) new Nimrod tent trailer, Then 18 foot hard side travel trailer, and finally the motor home!
Toured everywhere-towed everywhere--south, west, east, north, and in between!
I'd still be camping, but the wife is sickly, and has to stay close to her Dr., and her oxygen tanks and suppliers.
So, I sit and reminisce about the good old days.

About 2 years ago, i met a local fellow who is about 25 years younger than me, and he has a hard side camping trailer, the kind with the canvas covered front bunk.
He allowed that he was going out west to Arizona, for his vacation trip. He bought a GMC Sport-utility to tow with. and installed an auxiliary tranny cooler, and was worried about maybe having car trouble out there on the big old hiway!
He asked me if, in our many years of hauling campers and stand-up trailers, if i worried about having a break-down on the road.
Gee! When i think of the used cars i'd get to tow with, and how far we'd usually go on a trip, Maybe we were fat, dumb, and happy! But--we never had a new car or truck. Never could afford one, and didn't think it was very smart to tie up a pile of money in car payments. I'd get home from work, the boys would have every thing hooked up and ready to go. We''d grab a bite, and clean up and go! Sometimes to Hickory Hills Camp in Ohio, or our Bluegrass Park, north of Kittanning, Pa.
Usually if ya do break down on the hiway, a cop will come along fairly soon and get ya some help. When he heard of how we'd just "go", and not worry about the tow vehicle' he just shook his head.

Toni, Lol! Well, here, the frosts are random (unfortunately). We had a somewhat warm start to Winter last year, but in February it snowed and then we had an ice storm two weeks later. Some of the worst weather we've seen in this area.. ever. Our Summer wasn't as hot as I remember either, so I think it'll be interesting to see what happens this Winter. Oh my goodness am I on a roll here or what? First of all Ria by all means send me the smaller ones so you don't have to pay alot of postage. Besides they will probably ship and tranplant better if they are smaller. Maybe I can get more smaller ones if you find some place on the side of the road to dig them up. LOL Karen-gardenpaw, I would dearly love some of your ferns too. As far as I'm concerned I can use as many ferns as I can get my hands on. So by all means I would be very pleased if you would share some of your ferns with me too. Linda, I can't wait to get the bird of paradise plant from you! YIPPPEE Karyn1- I've never been into one of those markets but I guess there is a first time for everything. LOL What the heck is malanga roots??? did you by any chance have the opportunity to check and see if you had any bromeliad pups of ANY KIND? I'm so excited about the project that I'm working on and I can't wait to get everything and share the photos with everyone a little later in the year. I tried to download my camera to my computer and I'm still having problems doing so. ( I'm so computer stupid/dumb it's unreal). I wanted to share some of my blooms in the iris beds with ya'll. I know alot of you would be blown away. Unfortunately for me, it may take me a week before I figure it out. Either that or I'll have to go to Wal-Mart have it put on a disc and then send them in emails. That's about the only way I know how to do any of that. LOL Kylie-I can't wait till you can go to the post office and pop that puppy in the mail to me. I've been drooling every since all of you have said you would be more than willing to share with me. Hi Desi. I moved here from Atlanta almost 2 years ago. I spent the first year in denial that it is any different than Georgia. Its definitely very different. The main things that bug me are: The slugs The summer droughts (1st year here, no real rain in my yard for 42 days!) The lack of heat in summer to get Tomatoes and tropicals (that I miss) like Brugs, Cannas and Elephant Ears growing really good. Its recommended to grow them South-facing, against a warm wall and it does work OK but the results are a little disappointing after growing them in the South. I see Brugs all the time here but they are usually smaller. The warmer weather is shorter here too. The flipside is that you get to grow all those things that it was just too hot for in Ga., like Lilacs, Rhubarb, Sweetpeas and Gunnera! You don't have to water in the winter. No hideous soggy 90 degree and 90% humidity days. We have an air conditioner and I think we used it about 10 days since we got here. Oh Yeah, I actually miss the thunderstorms. Here the rain is usually just a steady drizzle. Atlanta got more rain per year but it usually fell all at once. The things I wish I knew when I got here: How DRY the summers are. That many plants considered shade plants in Georgia are actually sun plants here. I been experimenting with hundreds of plants so let me know if I can be of any help. Laura

I stayed briefly in Riding Mountain National Park when I drove across Canada a few years ago, I remember it as being a beautiful lush green place to stay.
