Best height for powder room vanity
Comments (10)Hi ajsmama - I've been following your posts with interest because I'd like to do something similar, if I can find the right piece -- not easy. I've been looking for a while. Everything is either too shallow, too low, or too wide (for my small bathroom). Using a washstand will work out great, if you can solve the height problem. Have you considered adding legs to the vanity? They would have be rather plain to go with the style of the washstand. I saw some on Van Dykes that I think would go (stylistically speaking). I don't think it would be too difficult for a carpenter to make similar legs out of oak to match your washstand. As long as the size and tapering match the existing washstand legs and you can get a reasonable match for the stain and finish, the modifications would be nearly inconspicuous, and since the joints would be so low, I don't think that people would notice the joints even if the joint lines show. If you're planning to paint the washstand, it would be impossible to tell. The back legs wouldn't need to be tapered because they'd be totally hidden (and the back legs on your washstand are probably square anyway). If your carpenter uses dowel joints, they should be strong enough, since you won't have to move the washstand once it's installed. Here is a link that might be useful: Van Dykes - plain tapered furniture legs (paint grade)...See MoreIs this vanity a mistake in this tiny powder room?
Comments (117)squirrel~ The space under my stairs is the area straight ahead when you walk into the room. Is that the area you were also referring to? It did actually have an opening to that area that drywallers trimmed out. I had them cover it up, as it really looked awful. It was a huge eyesore to walk in the room and see it next to the toilet area. :o( It was meant to be a doorway for access to the heating vent. Well, let's hope that heating vent never has to come out, because it's now walled into that space. WE'll have to tear out drywall to access that now. LOL! I am fairly minimal in my decor. I like a few giant candle holders/candles. A few gorgeous small photo frames, a great iron knick-knack of some kind. That's about it. A few paintings on the wall, or in this house hoping to find tapestries. So for me, the shelving/display space does not have to be a great amount. I guess the real reason I wanted countertop space was I wanted to use "guest napkins" with our monogram on them in that powder room. One of our good friends' used to use those for their parties, and I always liked the idea. Couldn't wait to have a "powder room" to use those in! I've found so many great "guest napkins" on sites, and really want to utilize them in my new space. So... I've got to figure out a little shelf or something handy to hold those towels should I go with a tiny iron vanity like those I pictured. Do you have any ideas where I would find a nice glass shelf that could hold those little rectangular guest napkins? You all do know what I'm referring to, correct? I could google glass shelf maybe? Anyone care to point me in a specific direction? :o)...See MoreWhere to buy powder room vanity?
Comments (9)I would look for a showroom near you that sells Cole & Co vanity bath collection if you are looking for something unique and you can afford to spend more. One of our showrooms also sells vanities by Strasser Woodenworks. They would be good if you want a well-built and traditional-looking vanity, but want to custom order it to get just the right combination of drawers and doors. Ronbow makes a variety of modern-looking vanities that are not too expensive. You can probably see their entire lines online before you go to the store. Look for a bigger Kitchen and Bath showroom that sells plumbing and lighting, sinks and bathtubs, faucets and shower fixtures. We have two or three local businesses like that here, plus Ferguson's who just opened recently. If you can't find this near you, look in an affluent suburb. You will not see a huge selection of vanities by the different manufacturers, but you will see a few, and that will allow you to see the way they are made. Look inside, look at the drawers, backs and floors of the cabinet storage areas. Look at the finish and the drawer pulls. Talk to the salepeople and show them the models that you liked online. See what price they will give you on them and ask about delivery and shipping costs. You might also want to ask if you are obliged to purchase the item, or if you can view it in the store when it arrives and decide at that time if it is what you want. I know for at least one of the stores like this that I have used, special orders like this are yours and are not returnable unless you pay a huge restocking fee...See MoreWainscotting in powder room: behind built-in vanity?
Comments (27)@Jan Moyer, thanks for the etemology lesson! Closet size room: check. No window: check. Powder for my wig ... it’s here somewhere.... Re: the fan: do you have a preference on location (over the toilet?) and brand/size/capacity? I’m guessing I’ll need an overhead (canned) light, in addition to sconces. With the sun tube that ceiling may feel cluttered. Is that as issue? i already bought the sun tube and I like natural light. Should I still use it here (seems like a good idea to me) or move to that hallway or ? @J OBrien thanks for your comments. Since you‘ve lived with this size room, is there anything you did that was a great idea or that you wish you’d done differently? @Ephma thanks for sharing! I love your home and that powder and laundry room too.(yes get the wine fridge lol) Great wallpaper. How wide is your powder room and your sink? (I’m back to considering a 24“ vanity so I have some modicum of storage). Thanks for the suggestion on the board and batten. Last night I googled, for the first time, the diff styles of wainscoting. Many! Which do you think is less formal? I live in a beach town and want this room to feel fun.geez, just what I need, another decision! thanks everyone! I really appreciate your help!!!!...See MoreJanet Mmm
