Help choosing paint color to complement wood tones in dining room

Hi Houzzers! I’m working on choosing paint colors for our main living areas before floors are installed. And I’d love advice from pros and homeowners who have won the battle of paint!! So, here’s our new floors. Mid-tone brown that are warm but with a smidge of grey. And here’s dining room furniture I’m purchasing. It’s a ‘rustic weathered charcoal finish’... or dark brown with hints of grey and a smidge of green. Rooms next to dining room will be SW Requisite Grey (40% lighter). I’d like to do a darker/cozier color in dining room...and something different. Was thinking a slate grey/blue but not sure if that will work wit the wood tones. Any suggestions on paint colors to consider? Thanks a million!!

There are so many paint colors out there that look great with brown! Neutrals, green, blue, and the list goes on. What colors do you like and what colors are in your decor? That is where I would start and it's where I do start when choosing paint colors for my home! You were asking about a slate gray/blue and here is what Newport Blue from Behr looks like with my wood dining room table:

Hi Bev, thank you for your comment.. beautiful dining room! So, I love blues and greys most. I’m going for a classic/streamlines Mediterranean coastal/rustic look. (Is that a thing?) Here’s our kitchen that’s open to the dining room (need floors and paint). In our adjacent living room, we’re working on putting silver travertine stacked stone all up the fireplace. Would love advice on colors, tones, etc. and perhaps what to avoid too (prefer not to pull out/ highlight the green in the furniture... our table/chairs also has a smidge of green). Thx!!!

laurensmom- Go Illini!!! Newyorkone- My paint deck doesn't have Squire Hill Buff (the deck may be old, I borrowed it from our painter). I did find Roasted Sesame Seed. Great color, it reads more orange than the Chestertown Buff. Definitely don't think I could put those colors side by side in adjacent rooms though. think they would compete. I need something lighter for our space, which doesn't get a lot of it's own natural light due to being on the North side of the house. Thanks for your suggestions. Keep em coming please!!?? Jen

Hmm. I'd sleep on it. See what bugs you more/draws you more. Go with your intuition. Put it in different spots. Look at it in different lights-morning, day, artificial lighting. Stop looking at them for several hours-and then look some more. Not easy I know. I choose my current flooring for a week minimum..gosh I was so silly I even took it next to my face and looked at both of us-me and floor sample lol-in the mirror..to see whether it flatters my complexion)) In the end I chose well, I love it. I'd say I love it madly. But to tell you the truth-if I picked something else, I'd probably like it too..) Because most of all I loved some flooring that we ordered-and were told it was discontinued. I had to choose again. I was so upset! Fast forward six years-I don't even remember what that first love of mine was..

The tile floors and the hickory cabinets work together, so my suggestion for the kitchen is to paint the knotty pine white Because the knotty pine is in the kitchen, a semi-gloss finish will make lighter work of cleaning it. "How knotty your wood is may guide you in deciding which types of primer and paint you use, as oil-based primers (like the paints) do a better job penetrating and sealing the wood and block tannins more effectively than water-based primers.” Bob Villa Choose an easy on the eyes white for all the whites in the house…any trim, ceilings. B.M. Simply White. For all the walls which are in proximity to the tile floor, try B.M. Pale Oak in an eggshell finish. The cabinet…I would paint it, but a different color than the walls…(however, you still see the pale oak wall behind it. All the railings, etc. that is a big job to tackle, so, at least for the present, leave natural; paint the spindles white; it will really change the look. Here is pale oak with spindles painted white: Accent color: turquoise or any color that gets you away from wood tones.

It looks like your chairs are very neutral. What are the colors in the rest of the rooms? What about window treatments? I would suggest finding a rug or drapes that I love and then choosing a paint color in one of the lightest shades contained therein, since the room is small.

Again, there are so many blues and grays out there that will work with all of your colors. I suggest that you go to your favorite paint website (I love Behr and I go there all the time to choose colors for my house) and play with paint colors that you can visually paint in a room (you can choose the room). Once you find something you like, even if it's a couple of colors, I suggest buying paint samples. Once you get the samples, paint a decent sized section on a wall or two and see how it looks during the day and night. Give yourself a couple of days to decide if that is the shade you want. It's what I did when I moved in our house 3 years ago. It's how I found the shade of blue in my dining room and the shade of gray in my living room, which is in the below photo:
This is Classic Silver from Behr and it is a true gray. It looks good with everything in my living room, including the wall hanging that is right of my Mom's painting. The wall hanging has a deep green border.
