Can I paint wall different color than backsplash?

I am going to a cream/ navy color scheme in my very open concept house. This is looking into the kitchen from the family room which will have a large navy area rug and cream sofa.

i would love to paint th kitchen wall navy also, but i don’t think the navy will look good in the backsplash area. The quartz counters are dark brown. Can I paint cream between the upper and lower cabinets and the rest of the wall navy? I think it would really set off the cabinets. All cream seems too blah.

I would go with painted glass or tile for the backsplash. Navy is a difficult color to get exactly right so make sure you get samples & test them out. A cream color might better for that wall.

I agree a glass backsplash would look great. It will feel dark with the walls painted navy. Maybe incorporate navy accents with the window treatments and rug under table. You don't want to be too matchy or overdo it. Maybe pull in another accent color to pull it all together. New, coordinating lighting could help update it too.

I think that your instincts are excellent! I like the inspiration pic - I forgot that grout lines can add a bit of 'cooler' tones. Good idea with something behind the stove. Maybe something raised, like the cord style in the pic. I also like laying the solid colour tile in a brick pattern. Gives the sense of a pattern without adding another colour. I'd avoid too many colours in the tile, so as to not compete with your counters.

Increase the pop of your wall color: I've heard of using glass panels with the back painted, too. didn't have time to read all the answers. I have no backsplash and have never regretted it...been over 6 yrs. It is painted with BM matte...which has ceramic in it. It is as beautiful now as it was when first painted. I love the fact that I can showcase other things ...art etc in my kitchen and no competition. Also if I ever want to change it is as quick as a paint brush...expense is minimal..paint only ! All in all I think it is serene as you point out . Here is one pick. Since I have a lot of high heat cooking in my kitchen..built in deep fat fryer as well as gas cook top I can definitely speak to the longevity of paint only. c ( more at this album )

I'll gladly let you snatch that paint brush out of my hand. ha ha. But at the same time if a little tiling will tie up the project, then I'm game. jodi_socal: I'm a little disappointed when you said fire and ice won't work. I just LOVE that F&I BS. But then agin, I think I know all along it's a little too much for my kitchen. Caryscott & petra: Thanks for the picture petra, it says a thousand words. Is spectralight glass tiles? Prices are pretty reasonable. What about that milk green color? will it work? maybe with some garnet pieces sparingly mixed in. I will take some pictures and post two HD Behr's paint card to aid in the discussion of color. Thanks again ALL! My gut feeling was that the navy would be too much....but I was becoming somewhat overwhelmed by the scope of the job - it’s pretty much four separate room “areas” in an open plan.

i have a navy patterned rug, and will pull in blues in my curtains.

It looks like you already have a low backsplash matching your counters. The trend is to remove that so that one material goes from uppers to counter. However, removing the existing strip can open a can of worms.

Since you are already concerned about the scope of the project, keeping that whole wall one, lighter color seems like a good choice.
